Hi I presume it is just using the favicon.ico that ie 5 uses, to display in the address bar. Which is a 16x16 pixel icon graphic. Cheers

Hi Phuzzy You need to create an icon called favicon.ico in an icon editor, once created all you need do is put it into the root of your website and ie 5 will automatically look for the favicon.ico on arrival at your site, and once found will place it into the address bar, and I presume if someone decides to bookmark your page the icon will be placed by the link in the favourites directory automatically

On a related note, I recently "lost" the icons for every site I had bookmarked that had one. I havent reinstalled my browser, or reformatted my HDD or anything. Is this a common occurence? Is it something I have done unwittingly? Can I stop it happening again?

You might lose them like clearing cookies or browser history. I've noticed the same thing and I think they disappear at this time. If you want more information and a java-based icon editor, try out favicon.com. I have no affiliation with them.

Phuzzy - at the top of the Webmaster World page, you'll find a "site search" link. Just search for the word "favicon" and you'll find more information than you know what to do with! :) TallTroll - haven't had a disappearing icon problem myself... let us know if you figure out how to fix it (without re-bookmarking all your favorites).

Phyzzy, welcome to WmW! Don't know anything about icons, but just wanted to help out with smileys. Just wanted to let you know that WmW turns 'colon o' into :o so when you type 'colon o right-parentheses' it doesn't make the face you were hoping. You can either turn off graphic smileys when posting (choose the option box above the button) or go with the old fashioned 'colon right-parentheses' :) :)
