>Tried hard for several months and gave up.
My simple guess would be that "trying hard for several months worked"...you gave up too quickly!

percentages is right the problem could be that you are expecting results tomorrow - the harsh reality of Search Engine Optimisation is that it can take a long time for it to work - So the general advice is: Never stop working hard on your websites, always strive to improve. Your website will get better and better and in turn you will probability see an increase in SERPs.

Thank you guys for the response.
Even though search engines are different internally, why is there such a huge difference in search results among yahoo/msn/google?
The metrics each search engine values the most are almost the same for each one of them. right?
They may differ only in few. Why then my website is nowhere in google?
On Yahoo, my website is displayed prominently below a major and well known webiste.
My website is listed in looksmart but not in dmoz.

Yahoo and MSN are just very easy to game (at the moment).
Unfortunately neither is the big source of SE traffic (although definitely worth having top spots).

You have to maintain a steady influx of incoming links to improve on the major search engines nowadays. Be patient with Google, you might be sandboxed, it takes time to come out.

While my website position moved from 3rd to second on Yahoo, surprisingly my website moved from 80th page to first page on google for the same keyword.
For the last few months, i did not do anything to my website and did not add any incoming links.
Can anyone throw some light on how a web page moved from 80th page to first page on google?
It was not even gradual movement like 80..60...50..10...1

I don't get it either, just last week I submitted my new website to all the search engines and in about two days I found it in page 1 on MSN, then a day later it I found it at ranking #1 on Yahoo and no sight of it on Google, another day after, 7th place on MSN, dropped to page 7 on Yahoo and no Google placing, Today still first page on MSN, disappeared from Yahoo, and still nothing on Google.
Is this normal or did Yahoo discovered my site was not worthy?
