Zhongsou leading desktop search in China

 12:45 am on Jan 27, 2005 (gmt 0)

article [news.xinhuanet.com]
Zhongsou.com, which is less well known than Baidu, launched early this month the 3.0 beta version of its desktop search software - Personal Information Gateway, with a nickname "iPIG".
Baidu.com has yet to announced any plan to develop desktop search products.
"Because of their new technology, Google and Zhongsou.com will be better positioned in China's searching market, although Baidu.com remains No 1," said Li.

This is an interesting article that gives some good basic data concerning the China market. For instance, the market breakdown last year:
  • Baidu 33.1%
  • Google 22.4%
  • Yahoo / 3271.com / Yisou 30.2%
  • other
The article has a strong Zhongsou bias, but it is interesting that they say that Baidu is not much of an innovator in this market. They tend to copy Google technology. Zhongsou claims to be coming up with home-grown technology, like their new desktop search.

Bill -

The so called "Desktop Search" for Zhongsou is a piece of software that displays a search box outside your browser that searches the Internet. It can not search your hard drive.

People in China call the Google like desktop search "Harddisk Search".

Thanks for that clarification netvisa. Have you had a chance to try the iPIG software yourself? Does it do anything more than add a search box? I find it hard to believe that the Zhongsou people would be boasting about their technological advancements only for an internet search box. I thought they were referring to a HDD type of search here.
