I noticed an inordinate amount of entries on my logs for referrals from excite.co.jp

After following a link back I found my site served in Japanese. Obviously some sort of babelfish kind of thing - but I couldn't get out of the excite domain to actually place an order.

Can anyone shed any light?

Excite has a Translation page where they have 5 options for users:
 1. Text translation - enter text and translate it from English to Japanese or vice versa
 2. Web page translation - enter a URL and translate it from English to Japanese or vice versa (followed links are also translated)
 3. Translation search - enter Japanese keywords and it will find English sites This is most likely what you saw sugarkane
 4. Translated directory listings - directory search
 5. Popular sites translated

If you posted the URL I might be able to tell you what keywords they were finding you under (if they were using the Translation Search).

Some interesting news on this front, Excite Japan is using a company called elingo for their translation services, including all those I listed above. However, as of November 27, this company has gone out of business. It is not certain whether Excite Japan will buy this company or it's technology, or go looking for another vendor. The elingo online machine translation between Japanese and English is probably one of the best ones available in my opinion. I'll have to keep my eye on this one.
