Where do they get their descriptions?

My site ranks quite well in Anzwers, which is great, but the description displayed is not great.
It is obviously human edited, and it wasn't by me, ODP or Yahoo - so where did it come from, and how can I get it changed? I think I've seen it on another engine or two elsewhere, so maybe it's not Anzwers specific.

TIA, Robin

Anzwers gets it's description from the description metatag. I found plenty of sites to support this theory. It's possible though if you have no metatags that they may grab some body text. If you're referring to a directory listing they use Looksmart Australia.

Hope this helps.

Could the page just be that old Robin that you forgot that was the description at one point? Anzwers uses Inktomi, which does support the meta description tag.

Brett is probably right...it is more than likely it is an old description that you have forgotten. I'm sorry I forgot to mention about Inktomi (I just assumed that you would already know that).

Anzwers uses meta tags or body text when Australia or New Zealand is selected and only .au or .nz domains appear depending on which country is selected. I used ten unrelated keyword combinations and no Looksmart results appeared for country specific searches.

However, when world is selected Looksmart and Inktomi results appear. They are a mixture of both databases and in some cases no Looksmart results appear at all. When using keywords for two of my customers unrelated sites no Looksmart results were returned. Both sites are indexed in Looksmart's database.

Keywords relating to my site produced top ten results from both databases and similar mixed results were returned for other keyword combos.

1 Looksmart
2 Inktomi
3 Inktomi
4 Looksmart
5 Looksmart
6-10 Inktomi

Robin, it could be an old description, as suggested by Brett, or it may have been reviewed by a Looksmart editor and indexed without you knowing about it. I have several listings with Looksmart for sites that have never been submitted.

Have you tried searching in Looksmart and Looksmart Australia to see if your site has been reviewed.

Hi everyone,
Just remembered today about this question that I asked, when I noticed the same description come up again on iWon search results.
I think Gorufu is right when suggesting that it was a Looksmart editor, since my site is listed in the Looksmart directory (I didn't even realise!). It couldn't have been META tags or body text, because it was written about me ("Robin Moffatt presents an archive of French-horn discussions as well as free classifieds and a list of selected CDs.")

Now I need to get the description changed. I didn't pay for my entry in the directory, and I'm not going to pay now (I'm not a business). I couldn't see anywhere on the site to update a free listing - is it possible?

as long as the site is not in commercial cats, you should'nt have any problems - though it may take a while.
