Ok, I know a bit off topic, but I have to throw this out there. Does anyone believe that there are 100's of datacenters out there? I personally have always classified a "datacentre" as a physical location, a "room full of boxes".
I have in the past tried to explain basic load balancing & server pool concepts to try to help people understand what they think are watching. I tried to paint a basic simple picture where each of these internet facing IP address is an address of a load balancer, that might redirect to other load balancers, that might redirect to many boxes(server pools) serving up answers to queries. There is not IMHO 100s of datacenters. There are 100's of internet facing IP address that serve results for queries. Each of these IP addresses within a range, may be mixed and matched in the load balacers, so that one IP address may be in many load balancer pools, and one box, may be in many server pools. It is possible in a well balanced enviroment to have a single box be in multiple server pools, responding to queries from multiple load balancer pools, all from a single internet facing IP address. So this begs the question, by doing queries on each of these internet facing IP address, which boxes are responding, where are they, and does it matter? Is valuble to know all of the addresses of the load balancers, when you have no idea if the box returning answer to your query, is responding to only requests from one internet facing ip address(load balancer), or many? They seem to have the same results on a particular IP for a period of time. So for example if you go to 216.239.59.104 and repeat a search every few minutes or seconds, many times over you keep getting the same results. The IPs are pointing at something which is consistent over an extended time. The IP adress does not point to a number of boxes with different data sets on them, one IP points to one dataset until the whole set of boxes changes or that IP is pointed at another set of boxes. So whatever is behind a particular IP in terms of hardware is not relevant. Sid

While they are stable for long periods, I do see that for a short period of time I can see different results by searching again and again at the same IP - but it is obvious that once it settles down again, all the results have changed. You can see that an update to the stored data has occurred. If you are lucky, you may then see the same effect at some other IP later in the day, or the next day.

When I traceroute a Google IP like 66.249.81.104 I get something like:
... - 64.233.174.132 - 216.239.49.248 - 72.14.238.136 - 72.14.239.17 - 72.14.238.166 - 66.249.81.104 but the path to that IP is changing all the time:
... - 216.239.47.130 - 216.239.49.38 - 72.14.238.235 - 72.14.238.136 - 72.14.238.166 - 66.249.81.104 and then just seconds later it has changed again:
... - 216.239.47.130 - 216.239.47.120 - 72.14.238.136 - 66.249.95.149 - 72.14.238.166 - 66.249.81.104 Notice that the path crosses through various class A blocks to get to the eventual destination.
I guess that with enough traces someone could work out how it all hangs together.

Just to add, they may have plenty of room at the plex and I do believe they may also have plenty of rooms in different states. Now I do see them doing this and I do agree WW_Watcher with the load balancers and all that network stuff. Just MHO.

OK. Next question. Why does <an online tool> use the couple of dozen IP addresses that it does? What is the logic behind the choices? Were they a representative sample of some sort? Are they still representative? . And for the main topic of this thread, are there any more IP adresses out there for Google search then? Post them here. These new IP addresses sure are a revelation. But wonder, why aren't these IPs live when searching on default Google? The IPs that are listed in the online tool are the ones that are live for most of the time, barring a couple of C-classes.

Google does a lot of load sharing based on data draw and geography. Based on the latest and on previous Google updates/dances/serp-changes I know that certain datacenters tend to be more predominant than others in my locale while the results that others reported during the same periods weighted towards different data centers. Of course, this is a rough observation and I do not expect Google to share a detailed explanation any time soon. Then again, I could be completely wrong.

I did a Google search for a few of the new IP addresses discovered and found several of them to be highly discussed in Chinese and other Asian language forums. Maybe some of those IPs are never shown to US or European searchers.
