Just saw the gray "English" thing has returned. Did anyone ever determine the significance, if any, of its departure and re-appearance?

As far as I know, it only appears when you access a datacentre directly by its IP address.

g1smd, I have been tracking 69 datacenters directly by IP address and it just disappeared over the last couple of days and now has come back. Frankly, I just don't get it;)

In my narrow niche, 'new' results appear on 26 out of 55 DCs : 47.3% The other 29 DCs have the previous (and better IMHO) results. This looks like a small retreat from Friday, when 'new' was slightly over half. -Larry [edited by: tedster at 7:28 am (utc) on June 14, 2006]

......DC watching is so stupid and futile. |
| Then why are you watching them?! The funny thing is earlier there was a thread about how stupid it was as well and yet those results that us DC watchers see have been and continue to be showing up on Google and it's sister portals. If it's really that stupid then how about not contributing your two cents here?! Sorry if I'm being a little direct but when people state that DC watching is futile and stupid it offends me because I watch it religiously and it indeed has never proved worthless to any of my sites that I've watched the last few years through the course of the many updates.

I don't think DC watching is stupid at all. If my traffic falls to a fraction of its former rate, I want to know why, period. I could just call Google and see my places in the SERPs, IF there was only one DC. Since there are dozens, <tool sites> are the only way to see if a new algo is spreading or whatever. Futile? In one way maybe. We cannot directly influence Googles algorithms and their propagation. We CAN look for subtleties in the 'new' serps, possibly making adjustments for those. If that does any good, I can't call it futile. -Larry [edited by: tedster at 7:36 am (utc) on June 14, 2006]

Hi, In another thread someone reported that 66.249.93.104 is showing the old results but in fact they are more like some reults I saw a few weeks ago. On that DC for my main target 2 word term there is a site which is there by virtue of having bought many backlinks from unrelated topic pages which use that term in the link text. There are two lisitngs with inset secondary pages and a few review and directory type sites in the top 20. Many of my serious competitors who should be there are not there, there's a smattering of authority but the omission of some serious competitor sites is unfair to both the site oweners and Google users. We remain at #4 but what is around us is less relevant than the old results where we are at #4 and nowhere near as good quality in the new results where we are at #1. On the new results we move to the top but other good sites that should be there also rise into the top 10. Are we seeing a third set of results or has one of the two changed significantly? Best wishes Sid

<snip> has 55 DCs you can check. i've seen them fluctuate between 25-31 DCs - can't really say at this stage whether or not they are retreating or propogating further. [edited by: lawman at 6:06 pm (utc) on June 13, 2006] [edit reason] No URL Drops Per TOS #13 [/edit]

I think they are still tweaking. I see pages pop up and disappear again. I would not be surprised if the results go back to the old results again but I'm sure there will be an update soon which will propagate these new results in a fine tuned version.

Is google interested in having good results at TOP10 in their competitive searches? Google is testing new results, but... what impact have them into advertisings? What CTR have them with the new results set? Do you think that better results will lower CTR in advertisings (and google revenues)? And more important: What google will do?

I'm seeing a little different mix on 216.239.59.99 and 216.239.59.147 -- for one KW these DC's give the "new" results; but for another KW they display results that are very similar to, but slightly different from, the "new" results. I noticed because one site I'm interested in drops from #4 on the new results (it's #5 on the old results) to #19 and the listing is for a deeper and slightly less relevant page.
