Keywords in Title?

I've noticed on a few sites (PR 6) that I'm doing SEO on I was able to get very high rankings just modifying title tags with multiple keywords in title... is this a common SEO practice?

eg <title> My homepage - Keyword 1 - Keyword 2 </title>

Also, Can overdoing it effect rankings? Could google ban me?

No, you are fine and practicing good modern optimization techniques. Just make sure to keep the title readable and clickable. Getting good rankings is one thing, getting people to click on the listing is another.
