Are 301 Redirects from non-www to www important?

I've seen some stuff on here and other boards about the 301 redirects from non-www to www with mixed opinions. After the last pr update, my index page remained unchanged at a pr4, but the non-www version, which was at 0, went to a 1. I try to direct everything at the www version but I guess google got there hands on it somehow. I just figured out how to do the 301 but am a little gun shy about implementing it as I've heard and read stories about huge taffic and pr loss, etc...When I do a google site: it appears the only page it has in its non-www form is the index page. However, in yahoo alot of my pages are indexed in the non-www. I've been receiving a lot of traffic from google over the last couple of months and am worried about dup content issues.
Should I implement the 301 and what negative impacts might I have to endure? PLEASE ADVISE!
