Google Directory is Updating
Expect lower PRs in the next PR update

It looks like the Google Directory is updating. And, it looks like most sites I monitor are losing some PR. If you were a PR6 a year ago ... you could quite well end up as a PR4 now.

PR, of course, doesn't affect the weather in Wisconsin.

Google, take a break! You're doing too much too soon :)

Hi,

The PR in the directory has been out of sync with the toolbar for quite some time , so i am unsure that it is an indication of what is to come PR wise for us? All my sites score one point higher in the directory than i am currently credited for in the toolbar.

Also when you say updated, do you mean they have taken a fresh " dump " ( love that techie term :) from DMOZ or only the PR.

My PR dropped by one for my index page in the Directory, as well as in the Google Toolbar. Other pages in my site have remained the same.

Our PR is same but pages that were listed in top 10 are now below 500, some not even in 1000. This is the case for almost all pages of our site. Looks like there is some heavy penalty.
Any guidance from experts here will be of great help.
Thanks in advance.

Walkman , i think it was in early Jan. I dont think we are due one yet , but with a major algo update and directory PR apparantley changing perhaps were going to get one. If one was in progress i think this thread would be quite long by now , perhaps some of the posters have seen a bit of flux and nothhing more.

My site made into DMOZ two weeks ago and was added to G directory just in the past few days.

Only anomaly is that my site's tooolbar PR is 5 and in the directory I am listed as a 4.

I've seen some minor flucturations in the Google Directory.

However, the top ranking site in my catagory has a PR 6, with 0 backlinks according to Google and is owned by an ODP editor.

Hmmmmm. Very interesting. Since when does an ODP editor get to rank above everyone else with no backlinks?

I did some further checking on the top 5 ranking sites in my category and found something very interesting:

#2 Position has PR 0* when it shows 5 in the directory
#3 position has PR 6* when it shows 5 in the directory
#4 position has PR 6* when it shows 5in the directory
*According to Google Tool Bar

***NONE*** of them have external link pages or resource pages.

Most of them had most pages with Supplemental results or no title which tells me something wrong with their site.

A lot of them had the same title on several pages.

Backlinks, according to Google are:
#1 - 0 backlinks
#2 - 34 backlinks
#3 - 12 backlinks
#4 - 0 backlinks
#5 - 245 backlinks

As said earlier, #1 is owned by an ODP editor with no outside links and no links coming in either.

Something is wrong with this picture.

If it's a widespread PR "downgrade" anyone knows what's behind it? It's not DMOZ losing another point. Or is it?

Re widespread PR downgrade.

My view is that not so long ago there was predominance of low quality "amateurish" site, but now the situation has changed with more and more quality sites being created every day. The PR algo has probably changed to accomodate this and medium ranking sites are now being pushed down the PR rankings. The effect is cumalative as most medium ranking sites get their incoming links from other medium ranking sites, which of course are also dropping down the rankings.

It seems to me that the work I have been doing on one of my sites which *should* have resulted in a PR increase has merely helped me to hold on to what I have. During the last two Google Directory updates my site has stayed the same where all the others in the same category have fallen.

The last time there was a change in my Google Directory category it forecast what was coming in the next Google toolbar update.

I hope this is the case. My primary site has moved up 200 poistions in my category with an increase of PR. The last repositioning that took place in December didn't affect my category standings but it did lower my PR by one.

I'll just cross my fingers and hope for the best!

Same here--I'm treading water and going nowhere -- and client sites I have been actively gathering links for did the same--held their own. Those i haven't attended to have dropped in rank by 1.

Are you seeing this Directory update on specific DCs or is it on the main index now?

The Google link: command is useless today. Check backlinks using other search engines. That site is PR6 because it has backlinks you aren't aware of.

How can you figure out that you dropped 1 point? My understanding of the directory is that the green bar is not that accurate (you could only tell a range of PR).

For months, I waited for my site to be listed in the Google directory, as well as ODP.

In December I finally got listed in both.

Today, I checked both and it's gone.

What the heck is going on?

Between the lines of a few posts in here I read a tough misunderstanding of the directory-pagerank scale: While googles toolbar pagerank goes from 0 to 10, the images in the google-directory represent values from 0 to 7 on a similar scale with a different logarithmic basis.

A guy named Chris Raimondi is said to first have discribed/dicovered this issue, you may google for that name to find a page with a more detailed explanation or someone else may post a relevant url here.

Oliver, the link has been posted before, like in message 4 in this thread [webmasterworld.com].

But the searchnerd.com site seems to be down. There are copies of it elsewhere for those who know how to use a er, search engine. :)

Sounds like you were removed for whatever reason. Email the category editor and the editor over them to try and get a reason. Did you change something radically?

JerryOdom, I didn't make any radical changes. Turns out that a second review by editors determined that my site wasn't in what they thought was the appropriate category. So I now start all over again.

I wonder if being removed from the ODP directory had anything at all to do with my site disappearing from Google. I'm not in Google's directory anymore, obviously.
