When google does an update it means new sites are added permently, sites get new PageRank, and backlinks are updated. It is basically google rolling out a new index which usually happens once a month. When goooglebot comes around to spider sites for the next update, usually 3 weeks after the crawl, its called the crawl. When Google changes the index slightly inbetween updates its called Everflux.
