Each update of the Google databases costs $1.27 million. This is apportioned as: $88,000 in staffing costs to initiate and supervise the 5 day operation $26,000 to replace servers that fataly overload while calculating PageRank $1,156,000 in additional bandwidth fees as webmasters watch the dance and repeatedly check their rankings for various terms and check their PageRank during the 5 day operation
At a board meeting in the Staff Canteen on 25th December 2002, it was agreed to reduce the number of updates from 12 to 9 per year, resulting in a saving of approximately $4 million per year. Proposals to reduce the number of updates to 6 per year were rejected.
The amended update schedule for 2003 will now be as follows: January 14th 2003 February 27th 2003 April 2nd 2003 May 14th 2003 June 31st 2003 August 5th 2003 September 22nd 2003 November 5th 2003 December 24th 2003
