October 2002 Google Update

 10:03 am on Oct 31, 2002 (gmt 0)

Definately getting different results on backward links for yahoo. www showing 657k and www2 and www3 showing 654k. Results for CNN are also different. Looks like the real deal.

so much for your advice on "content" huh?

Thanks NFFC and GoogleGuy.

If my dad said to me once "Son it takes a ton of patience to make it through this world", then he said it to me a thousand times...

Uhhhh, somebody check him for guns.

 9:48 pm on Oct 31, 2002 (gmt 0)

And the AirForce crashes and burns....

Belgian, you said:

<<when most pages from a site are dropped in WWW2 -only 2 of about 60 remain in the index - at this stage of the dance, can they still show up in the next few hours/days?>>

Google is famous for indexing pages as long as there is some kind of content on them and they have inbound links to them. If some of them got dropped, don't sweat it. Things get very weird at this stage of the game, and this is no time to break out in cold sweats. There is an excellent chance they will be back within several days.

GoogleGuy, this update's delay was all about your being unsure which button to push, right? So, for November, we ought not have that problem again, right? ;) It's the RED one. Put a sticky note on the office fridge.

 9:48 pm on Oct 31, 2002 (gmt 0)

check out Googleguy's past [google.com] and judge then. There is a lot to learn between the well intended lines in these forums..

>check out Googleguy's past and judge then. There is a lot to >learn between the well intended lines in these forums..

agree 100%.

my message is out, the pros will understand.

uh guns? nope. a peaceful soul is behind these lines.

GoogleGuy, your engineers must be horrified at the though of everyone concentrating on link analysis? Or should we be looking at content still? :) :) :)

I still have lots of confidence in google, that's not the problem.
Before this update, i was between #1 and #10 for plenty of my pages. I think i had good content-rich pages.
A few of my pages however didn't do well at all, so i tried to work on my backlinks.
Before this update, i had 4 backlinks , now in WWW2 i have 14.
Yesterday, i made another chance to the site. It's a site that uses frames so in the noframes section of the homepage, i added links so the site could be indexed properly by frames-unabled crawlers.
I don't think i did any spammy thing by adding these links yesterday.

During the dance, i never noticed such a major differences before so that's why i'm really worried now.

 10:02 pm on Oct 31, 2002 (gmt 0)

Belgian, I hear you, but try to stay calm. It's way early yet.

 10:07 pm on Oct 31, 2002 (gmt 0)

Back to unemotional things ...

How fast can they remove a spammer?

Threre could be a answer at the google knowledge base.
- proofed: they remove it very quick (hours) if its either blatant / really obvious / really bad in users eyes
- proofed: they remove it after the next update if it can be matched by machine / algo
- proofed: it takes very loooooong if the spam's done "intelligently"

Brett, if you like i could write a faq's answer for this.

 10:07 pm on Oct 31, 2002 (gmt 0)

okay okay, i guess it's time to head for another beer...
it helps to calm down

Thanks ... and cheers :)

 10:13 pm on Oct 31, 2002 (gmt 0)

Has anyone else noticed the absence of an ODP backlink on 2 and 3?

 10:14 pm on Oct 31, 2002 (gmt 0)

this is my first time actually examining an update as it happens... so basically, how long does it last? will it be over tonight? or does it run a couple days?

 10:17 pm on Oct 31, 2002 (gmt 0)

Questions about Google SERPs.

First thing that's interesting to me this time is that almost nothing in my positions has changed. This seems weird. i am usually in the top 10 for my preferred search terms and i still am (just so you know i'n not whining), but even those positions for some of my words where i was #138 and #64, for instance, are precisely the same. It's hard to believe this could be. Something is fishy. Is the dance really done?

Second, i've noticed another weird thing with one of my search terms. When i drop from #1 i ALWAYS drop to #6. That's it. #1 or #6. How can this be? It's been going on for quite a few months.

<<this is my first time actually examining an update as it happens... so basically, how long does it last? will it be over tonight? or does it run a couple days?>>

The angst and stress will continue for 5-7 days. To be followed by more angst and stress. :(

 10:37 pm on Oct 31, 2002 (gmt 0)

from a users POV I like what I see on www2 and 3...more relevant results...still a little too US biased, but that's kind of inevitable I suppose

from a webmaster POV we're up across a range of search terms and from 22 to 12 on a single word with 6 million results...which can't be bad

 10:38 pm on Oct 31, 2002 (gmt 0)

For GoogleGuy or anyone qualified,

Isn't it redundant to have Google Directory results come up in the SERPS? Why would I want to click on that link and go through those results looking for my relevant content there when if I wanted to use the directory, I could just click on directory results at top?

 10:41 pm on Oct 31, 2002 (gmt 0)

I think the directory categories that show up in the serps is quite a good way of using a similar sites feature. Sites that apear in the same ODP category must be very relevant to each other.

 10:43 pm on Oct 31, 2002 (gmt 0)

I've just checked and I have a DMOZ.ORG back link for the one site I've checked.

Last month I noticed that a directory had changed its PR substantially - even though the site had not changed layout. The higher pages were the same but as you got lower down the pages had gone from PR3/PR2 to PR1. Has a similar thing happened to DMOZ? The lower pages are no longer PR4 and so don't show up in back links?

 10:44 pm on Oct 31, 2002 (gmt 0)

red_bull: i also think so!

 10:53 pm on Oct 31, 2002 (gmt 0)

I meant that a google directory page is showing up ranked as #14 and another one at #19 and so on. Throwing those in seems to say "we're adding these in, just in case our algo results are NOT relevant to your search."

 11:10 pm on Oct 31, 2002 (gmt 0)

We need a search function to search within a long thread like this! Hey Google! :)

 11:12 pm on Oct 31, 2002 (gmt 0)

Airforce just is not having a good day at all! Although he only signed up today.. any guesses on a previous name for him? :) Maybe this bet I could win but doubt cause no idea who this guy is...

Anyway... chill with the backlinks..dmoz, yahoo and such are missing.. all mine are still missing..theirs noway they would be dropped unless google screwed up... those links are solid so they will appear... if not then I seriously would like answers..

Point of the story..Chilllllllllll... relax... in a couple of days the results will show...then we will have a ton more of people like airforce I suspect :)

 11:12 pm on Oct 31, 2002 (gmt 0)

Thanks Iguana I thought maybe that was the case, except the page my site's on in dmoz is PR5? and still no backlink showing on www2/3. Weird. We'll wait and see.

 11:18 pm on Oct 31, 2002 (gmt 0)

AirForce's rant does sound suspiciously familiar....

 11:23 pm on Oct 31, 2002 (gmt 0)

It sounds like half the people on here will in a couple of days though....haha

 11:25 pm on Oct 31, 2002 (gmt 0)

i'm glad i'm not the only one with this backlink problem, if i hadn't had this forum for support i would go nuts, on halloween.

but... the pages linking to me do show backlinks? i don't like this.

Help me be 1, are your backlinks showing yet?

(sorry helpmebe, must be the update weirdness happenin to me)

 11:33 pm on Oct 31, 2002 (gmt 0)

Hey..nope..just checked again after reading your post..zip..zilch..nada..not a thing. Not that worried though..although I have never seen such a thing happen..theirs no reason for google not to count them... one link on yahoo is a pr5 page with limited number of links on it, so not bad and dmoz is a decent link..am in both still so i seriously doubt google would exclude these for any reason at all... its just the shuffle I would think.. if their not their in say well lets say sunday night or monday..then Ill be flippin for answers...but I am more then sure as things settle I will see them.... If not you will see a post asking for answers..or should I say demanding answers...hahhaa....
For now..I just cant be bothered stressing... going to actually head over and do some serious updating now.. christmas is just around the corner.. gotta get things ready...

<edit> ikbenhet1, no fair man.. you just changed your post from asking me if I saw my backlinks... now I sound like a dumbass for answering you

 11:35 pm on Oct 31, 2002 (gmt 0)

Scary (probably coz its halloween)...

Normally I see only 2 versions of the index. The old one (www) and the new one (www2 & www3)..

This time however there are 3 versions for me.

1 = the old one (I'm ranked number 5 or 6)
2 = my site is ranking number 1 for a term I REALLY want
3 = my site is basically nowhere (its in the index but ranked poorly)

I'm hoping that the number 2 option will turn out to be the new index.

 11:36 pm on Oct 31, 2002 (gmt 0)

Just for the record, I don't mind airforce's ranting. It's good to hear everyone's viewpoints and it seems like many people are scared to say anything bad about Google because of how powerful they have become over our lives.

I actually kinda like hearing from someone that's more PO'd than me.

Just my two cents...

 11:48 pm on Oct 31, 2002 (gmt 0)

For all of you who have lost a position or twenty...
Here is the Beatles "The Long and Winding Road" changed into a PageRank ballad:

The long and winding road that leads to Google's top
Has somehow disappeared
I've lost that road before
It always leads me here
Back to Webmaster World

The wild and windy nights the GG dance washed away,
Has left a pool of tears crying for the day.
Why leave me standing here, let me know the way
Many times I've been unknown
And many times I've cried
Anyway you'll never know
The many ways I've tried, but
Page rank leads me back to the long and winding road
It left me standing here, in this long long thread to go
Don't leave me waiting here, lead me to your top
Da, da, da, da --

People can speak anonymously here if they so choose, but they do need to leave out the X-rated language. I know Google's dominance can be scary, but I think most of us have a lot of respect for Google and are not much inclined to slam it when things go south.

We are spoiled spoiled spoiled. We have a search engine whose crawler indexes everything in sight, it updates like clockwork, it delivers generally highly relevant results, and we have ol' GoogleGuy who does a pretty great job of communication

Like anyone else, there are times I say anti-Google things, but on balance it's a great operation and truthfully I don't have much to bitch about. I mean, would I want to deal with AV or Ink dominance instead? No way. I've fallen in love twice. With the Mac in 1985, and with Google in 2000. :)
