The July update is definitely underway, my sites have all changed positioning subtantially, mostly for the better, on www2 and www3, and at the moment I am a happy camper. Now to go lay in a stock of antacids (for the churning stomach, something that happens in Calif. due to Google updates and earthquakes...).

And away we GO!

Good luck to you all. :)

This is definitely the update. The cached pages for my sites are all showing about 7/6/02 (added by my server, not a Google fresh date).

Apparently the Google dance has begun. If not, delete this post. If so, should I panic because my main site so far is nowhere to be found on www and www2??!! A small, one page site that I just started *is* in the current index. However, the main site is *totally* MIA. As in, it couldn't be a PR0 issue, because I can't even find my site using search terms that only appear on some pages on it. And, link:site shows nothing for this site in www2 and www3. My site was crawled by Googlebot last over 2 weeks ago, so I know it isn't a matter of my site being down. Should I be afraid? VERY afraid?

Was your site in the June index during the last google dance, or was it added to the June (current) index during a minor update? I had a new site added to the May index during a minor update, gone in the June index and never added to the June index, back the July (new) index.

My site has been in the index for several months. (Since the rules here don't allow directly mentioning the site, anyone interested can find it in my profile.) It has a number of inbound links, including very respectable ones like being in the DMOZ and Yahoo directory. Googlebot crawled it fully early this month, and the last visit from Googlebot was July 15. Nothing about it in particular that should get a Google death penalty, and if somehow it got the dreaded PR0 it would still be findable, but with great difficulty. The whole site seems gone *completely*.

And, don't worry. I'm not about to kill myself yet. I'll wait until the dance is over before anything that drastic. ;)

if i update and upload pages now, following the new results seen on www2 and www3. will it still have influence on the results or is it already too late?

One question - I had two new sites indexed all last month by googlebot and they are not in www, 2 or 3? Maybe August? Love hurts......

Tuna, yes it's too late now. If it's not in the new update, then it's wait until late august.

It's the one you want to be in anyway as the back too school sept rush will hit.

Inbound links are significantly up, by about 50% for the site I track.

I'm happy. :)

At first look I get the impression that the title has less weight in this index. Early days though.

I hope I'm not the only one who isn't seeing this at all yet. I must be pulling from a different data center that doesn't have the results yet. The link: command has been dropping in and out of functionality all evening, as often seems to happen shortly before an update, but there are no new results with either link: or site:

rjohara: are you looking on www3.google.com? - this doesn't pull from multiple datacenters (as far as I know).

YES!!!!!!!! The update has definitely started.

Nearly one month to the day on these boards and suddenly I've jumped from the 3rd page to the 1st for my target keyword!!! Yes, I know, it still has to settle, but it's a definite sign of progress.

Thanks for the great advice everyone... :)

Yes its always fun watching the update! However I have sworn off checking more than once a day for a few phrases because it is a major waste of time.

From past behaviour I see...

1. PR seems to be factored in at the very last stages of the 3 to 4 day update. Thats why new pages often perform well early in the update but drop at the finish line..

2. As we all know, rankings shift a lot during the first few days. Last month, the main www didnt really settle for us for 2 weeks...

3. Results early in the first stages bear only some resemblance to how it settles. Ours vary wildy through www, 2, and 3 for those days. Really, the only one that counts is that at the end of the update. And you cant do a thing about transient results - you are just an observer, until it settles, so going off changing pages after the first few hours or days may not be time usefully spent.

Save the time peering at results for improving your site for later updates!

Good to see some of you are happy. However, still no joy here in Mudville where I am. My main site is still nowehere to be found, for whatever reason. I can't imagine I could have got the Google Death Penalty, as I haven't been doing and wild crosslinking of sites (I only have 2, and the one that is in is just a one page site that just went online a bit back and still under development), and nothing like invisible text keyword stuffing and the like. I can only hope my site is still buried somewhere in Google's database, and will rise from the grave. :(
