I hope that discussion of news.google is not out of place here. I couldn't find another place for it.
I publish a newspaper focusing on local news, but which also includes some statewide and national articles.
Our relationship with news.google has been an on-again, off-again one, and I'd be very interested to know if there is anything that we might be doing that causes Google News to drop us every now and then.
When we first began publishing, Google News found us, and I was pleasantly surprised to find several refers from news.google.com.
Then, after switching to a .php software to allow my reporters to add their content directly, Google News dropped us.
After the fact, I learned the reason for that one. We use a naming convention such as article_1.shtml, article_2.shtml, etc. and for some reason, Google News wasn't picking up anything with a numeric naming pattern of fewer than three digits. Once we hit article_100.shtml, Google News came to visit again.
Over the past year, we've been regularly picked up by Google News; but sometime around the first week of September, they stopped picking up our content.
We're in the four-digits now, but they picked us up long after we hit 1000.
Does anyone know what sorts of things might trigger the off-switch in Google News? There is only one other online newspaper in the state north of Bangor, and they're well north of us, so it's not a matter of duplicate content.
