Sudden Penalty
if this is Penalty?

 7:05 am on May 12, 2004 (gmt 0)

I noticed my very well performing site for 100s of Reginal Keyword lost its Index from Google Cache 3 days back.

Today whole site has disappeared from Google, NOTHING in cache, NOTHING indexed, NO referals.

1) I saw the Fresh Tag on index page on 6th May
2) Index not in Cache on 8th may
3) Whole site about 300 Pages out of Google / completely disappeared, nothing in cache.

Can this be a Sudden Death Penalty? what could be the possible reasons?
I can rule out that BAD links is not at all a problem.

 12:37 pm on May 12, 2004 (gmt 0)

Sounds like a manual removal to me.

 12:41 pm on May 12, 2004 (gmt 0)

what does the toolbar show? Do you still have backlinks?

Grey and still backlinks I'd vote for a manual penalty.

 12:44 pm on May 12, 2004 (gmt 0)

If it is the site in your profile then it has a PR 6.

 4:23 pm on May 12, 2004 (gmt 0)

I too feel that its a manual Removal
Yes, it has a PR6 and 1 way natural links from many respectable sites.

It went all of sudden, NO symptoms like missing Cache for longer period, No Fresh Bots, No Crawls etc!

Its a shame on Google that one of the most updated and clean site on that region is booted for no reason.

People please help! I have a sinking feeling.

 4:30 pm on May 12, 2004 (gmt 0)

I was dropped from Google last Wednesday then reinstated and dropped again today. Still not back in.

I've no idea why, it seems only to be affecting the index page.

 4:46 pm on May 12, 2004 (gmt 0)

do the following:

do a site search [site:domain]
if no results then search do the same search on the other data centers. try search on www2.google.com, www3.google.com. also try the other data centers. do a search here what the google data center ip addresses are.

=> if you find your site in some and not on other datacenters, then you may be caught in between updates.

=> if you find your site through the site:domain search, check whether you're listed as url-only, i.e. no snippests or titles. in this case, hope this is only temporary

=> if no results, do a [site:domain rareword] where rareword is a keyword that you know exists in most of your pages. this query could possible show whether your pages have been classified as supplementals. nobody knows how to correct this if it happens.

don't jump to the conclusion that there is a filter.

Your site dropped Ranking drastically to nothing or Your index page was outta Google database?

 5:09 pm on May 12, 2004 (gmt 0)

Thanks for your advice, BUT my site is no more in Google database on any of the IP, and it happened all of sudden

 5:16 pm on May 12, 2004 (gmt 0)

and of course, we forgot the obvious. if your server was down the last time googlebot visited, then you definitely will be completely out of the index.

if you are getting crawled now, then your site will eventually appear again.

this happened to me when google was still updating once a month. at least now, pages can get in much sooner.

 5:51 pm on May 12, 2004 (gmt 0)

No, Server was never Down, and further...if even it was Down for few hours (which never happened)... I wonder it will be COMPLETELY out of index.

 6:12 pm on May 12, 2004 (gmt 0)

is Googlebot visiting you anymore? if yes, what does it look for (just robots.tx, / etc?).

 7:57 pm on May 12, 2004 (gmt 0)

Wanna_learn I fear your site has been penalised.
You seem to have nice links but I would look at possible causes for duplicate penalty.
You seem to be using a template for your site that other sites are using.

 8:13 pm on May 12, 2004 (gmt 0)

It does sound like a manual action, but that is a fairly rare action -- I suspect more manual actions are hypothesized in this forum to members, than Google does to all webmasters.

If the template is not your own design, then is it possible it may have something like hidden text or hidden links -- that you did not notice?

Cloaking, if being done, would cause this -- but surely you would know about that.

You speak only of the template, but where does the actual content come from? If it is copied from elsewhere on the web (or vice versa), then conceivably the Page Rank may have been shifted from one clone (yours) to another.

 8:21 pm on May 12, 2004 (gmt 0)

Googlebot is no more on my site after the freshbot of 6th may

This is our OWN originally Designed Template, and to give the site a consistant look, we use it.
How can you say that its been used by other sites?

Since Website is done 100% by us only, the possibility of hidden text or ****ty things is ruled out.

I still suspect that its a Manual removal.
FYI, this site was on 1st page for some majr KW, where the other 9 sites were mostly Information and government sites.

I suspect that Google has booted me to sqeeze $$$

 8:37 pm on May 12, 2004 (gmt 0)

I don't know what to say. Is the same exact info you have, on other sites?

I know that many travel sites pull the info from the same database with different templates. If your site is not one of those, e-mail google I guess.

 8:41 pm on May 12, 2004 (gmt 0)

I misread your earlier post, and got the impression the template had come from somewhere else. If that's not the case, then skip to the next hypothesis.

>I suspect that Google has booted me to sqeeze $$$

Take off the tinfoil hat. If an actual instance of that ever was publicized, Google would be toast, the world's largest dead server farm. If it ever happened, what would be the chance some employee would let it slip? And google can't just change their Domain Name and start over like some dodgy doorway-domain spammer. Everyone knows where they live.

It is noways worth the risk. Only a company that doesn't value it's reputation could afford that...and this is Google, not SCO.

 8:48 pm on May 12, 2004 (gmt 0)

The Pages are pure HTML, no dynamic content. I am pretty sure that the way Google evaluates Duplicate Content.... my site is 100% ouuta reach of that Penalty.

Have already written them the problem

I pray you were true! because then I would be in the position to think..what exactly went wrong.

I am more worried about tha fact that ALL happened so suddenly. We have seen big portals sinking down but the carry some symptoms.

Anybody seen GG around last days?

 9:01 pm on May 12, 2004 (gmt 0)

>I suspect that Google has booted me to sqeeze $$$

I checked some of the backlinks shown through Google. Seems like a few similar looking, similar content, all owned by the same company (your company?) are linking to it. Could it be some crosslinking penalty imposed after some competitor complained? (Google didn't show most of the links. Wondered what type of links those were.)

 9:05 pm on May 12, 2004 (gmt 0)

Duplicate content is just that, content that exists in many places. I took a 10 word phrase from the first paragraph on your site, put it in google and 10 other sites appeared that had the same first paragraph, one with a very similar design.
Could this be the reason?

 9:06 pm on May 12, 2004 (gmt 0)

I would tend to think it is all your similar sites that are cross linking tripped a filter.

Google rarely does manual removals and your site just doesn't seem to fit the bill for an international event to have them remove it.

Look at the crosslinks with your dupes and you will find your answer.

I've seem the exact same thing happen many times and anybody who has visited this board for a while has to.

It is as simple as that.

 9:08 pm on May 12, 2004 (gmt 0)

I had a very bad experience with Google efen after having MOST natural linking.

Yes my few sites Link to it, but they are altogeather on a different IP, plus NO linking for the sake of Linking.

I am keeping far from those SAME WEBMASTER dodgy Linking for last several months.

As far as the Complaint of Compititor goes, it again raise the issue ... CAN SITES BE REMOVED MANUALLY?
On top of it, I guess ppl. in Google have enought brains to discern well.

 9:15 pm on May 12, 2004 (gmt 0)

am not able to understand what Dupe are you talking about?
NOTE - If you are talking about my other site which is almost same , I am using Robots.txt to disallow it from crawling. And Further there is NO CRWAL on that site for last several months.

I am pretty sure that I do not have a Duplicate Content on my other sites which are linking to this one!
+ Its on altogeather a Different IP
+ almost No Crosslinking from my other sites , FYI I have 4 more sites which are on totally different focus.
+ This site has enough of Unique Content and regular updations.

Please avoid to visualise the scene where Webmasters have 100s of Travel Portal over similar subject and they interlink eachother.
This is certainly NOT the case

>I don't know the real cause, but if it happened to me, I will clean up my link structure and then request Google for reinclusion explaining everything. No need to be agressive, it won't help. And ...expect competitors to watch your every move.

 9:32 pm on May 12, 2004 (gmt 0)

I agree with you absolutely
But what should I clean?
- Those Links that offers some useful reading about the topic of my site?
- Links to my other own Sites, which I have been linking very naturally and are on entirely different focus?
Further there is NOT at all heavily cross linking.. almost nil.
- Every good SEO swap links with related and quality sites, after a through evaluation.
and again..this site has enough of Quality referals.

Seriously talking, I am still not able to digest any of the logic to say that this site is penalised for Linking/Dupe/use of Template/etc.
Being very precautious already about all these factors, I would say this is the most holy.

 9:36 pm on May 12, 2004 (gmt 0)

Ohhh Just noticed that
I had 238 Backlinks, out of which approx 200 were from this site itself

Now when I see my Backlinks...it still says 238 Backlinks...BUT DO NOT SHOW LINKS FROM THIS SITE ITSELF... which were shown earlier.

Earlier = till 6th may

 9:43 pm on May 12, 2004 (gmt 0)

did Google remove the other sites that link to /are run by you?

 9:49 pm on May 12, 2004 (gmt 0)

No, other sites do not have any problem

Trsut me, its not because of Linking from my own sites, as they are only 5 more...and almost negligible crosslinking.

I can Sticky the URL of other sites if somebody wants.

Any light on this new Observation?

didn't accidentally laod the wrong robots.txt to this site did you.?

 7:37 am on May 13, 2004 (gmt 0)

Don't know if that causes the trouble but robots.txt returns a 404 Not Found at both sites roayl*** and real*** ...
