| How to find search-ranking of a page for certain keyword?

For example: if I search with the keyword "example" in Google, is there an easy way to find out what the position of my site "www.example.com" is for that keyword? I wish I knew more about tracking/ranking/traffic software, but don't. I assume they will tell you the rank, but from what I hear it's not always smart to use them - penalized?
