How to find search-ranking of a page for certain keyword?

 7:21 am on Apr 6, 2004 (gmt 0)

Is there an easy way to find the ranking of a page when searching in Google for a certain keyword. For example: if I search with the keyword "example" in Google, is there an easy way to find out what the position of my site "www.example.com" is for that keyword? Is it on page 1, page 99, or nowhere in Google at all?

It'd be nice if Google numbered their results, like Yahoo. Is there a reason why this isn't so? I wish I knew more about tracking/ranking/traffic software, but don't. I assume they will tell you the rank, but from what I hear it's not always smart to use them - penalized?
