Hi, hope someone can shed some light on this for me. I have been asked by a friend to help promote their web site. I did a check on google and they had no back links, ok so I did a search in google for the site name and found about 300 sites that link to it. The site went through a rebuild recently and it was promoted at some point by an SEM company. I put a link from the site I currently work for and this also failed to show up. Can anyone help

If the back links have a PR less than 4 they won't show up as backlinks. If this is the case you should be aware that having a lot of backlinks which have low or no PR's can have quite a negative affect on your own PR.
As for the backlinks and PR crawl there hasn't been one of those in weeks which could well be another good reason.

Going back a bit the link I put up as a test was in January, and that links page was last visted on 11th March. the site I work for gets a robot every couple of days, so I would have a least expected to see that one when I queried the back links.. or am I being a bit over optimistic.
The links that were already pointing to my friends site there may have been been there for years.

I have 70+ sites that have been linking to me for several years but since the last few rounds of major updates Florida... etc all but 6 of them are no longer listed in Google as linking to me. (I did not change my site during the updates)
Most are over 5PR
My ranking has moved back up to pre Florida position (#1 for two words) when Google showed I had over 70+ sites linking to me. Now of course Google only see's 6 sites linking to me!
Seems like I want to say links have become less important, but then I see a company with 24,000 back links using a template page getting to the top of the list.

If G does increase the time between Link/PR updates surely that will result in the searches being that little bit more out of date.
They update PR and backlinks internally on a very different schedule to what is made available publically. It is possible that the stir in the SERPS last weekend was due to an internal update in PR and backlinks...
