Hi My site has been knocked out of a Google directory category; traffic to the site was bulding, google references were OK. Can anyone suggest actions? My site has many more quality links to it than Google is picking up. Competitors' sites do have some of these links showing. Suggested reasons? If your site is at www.example.com would you recommend having other domains pointing to your site such as www.examplekeyword.com or www.examplelocation.com or is that a big NO.

If the ODP has dropped your site, and there could be many reasons for that, then you'll gradually drop out of each of the downstram data users sites one at a time as they go back to the ODP and get the latest version of their RDF dump.
Your site may have been deemed unlistable and simply deleted. In that case you should try other directories for listings, and look at other linking partners instead.
However, it is entirely possible that your site was originally listed in an inappropriate category, or that it wasn't listed in the best category. If so, then it would have been moved to the unreviewed area of the new target category, awaiting a new review. In that case it drops out of the public listings while that is done.
Occasionally an area is completely reorganised, and sites moved to a new category structure. They may drop out of public view for weeks or months.
These are general comments, as WW doesn't do specific site critiques.
