They're a bit hard up at Google at the moment, the calculator batteries are running out and they can't afford any new ones...
Seriously, the pages listed are those that Google has cached and can bring up in search results. The larger number is probably some kind of inaccurate guess at the number of pages it really knows about. Take the number of pages you actually see in the results as the true measure of how much of your site Google knows about.

actually, for my site the larger number wasalmost EXACTLY the number of pages I had at the time. So I figure that number is the pages it has spidered, while hte actualy pages listed are those that have gone through the indexin process.
