GG recommends them - as they're obviously efficacious for crawling - but do you think this means Google might actually be able to identify a Site Map link or title?

If so, might there be any disadvantages to having a Site Map e.g. a page missed off the site map not being crawled?

Any thoughts?

Sure thing. Not necessarily by page link or title. Any page with an above ratio of # links/basic text (compared to the rest of the site).

Just a thought. If you were the the Freshbot looking for new pages to Freshindex, would that not be a place to check out? (certainly if it often contains new links to new pages).
