Deanril...I have the google toolcar downloaded, but by typing in my URL I just get my old PR. Is the new PR showing on -ex too? I know it's not showing on plain old www

Anyone else seeing duplicate backlinks appearing in -ex.google.com?

Not that I'm complaining of they stick :)

kevinpate, hard to say so early in the update. You say the index page isn't showing up but other pages are? That doesn't sound like a penalty. I would wait a little bit for things to stabilize first. People leap the conclusion that there's some penalty way too often.

Morgan, that really doesn't sounds like a penalty or anything like that to me. I would wait a little while at this point.

kevinpate, I checked, your site looks the same as mine in terms of PR, totally gray index, interior pages have some PR still. If you search on the first 3 words of your title, an interior page comes up first, which of course makes no sense normally.

I guess it could be interesting to pay close attention to the progress of a penalty, but your site looks pretty innocuous. Mine is too, I'm pretty conscientious about linking strategy and invisible links.

If you hear anything that could help, if you figure out anything different, I'd love to know about it, from anyone else as well. Thanks and good luck.

Googleguy, are YOU saying that the results on ex-google are the "update" results or are these the results before the real update on www.google.com.

teeceo.

Well, I definitely hope I leapt to a conclusion ;), for kevinpate and my sake. If I did, sorry, just edgy.

I had convinced myself of how unproductive reading this stuff is midstream, but I jumped on in anyway. We'll see how it turns out, thanks for taking your time GoogleGuy.

Welcome to the party, davewray. :) Morgan, you might want to write to search-quality at google.com and give some specifics. But that doesn't sound like a penalty to me. And I'm supposed to know. :)

One thing that really gets me..It's a wonder that not all webmasters use this site! Are they nuts? It's so full of excellent information and you can't go wrong! (So, thanks Brett :)

Kinda reminds me of that line from Kindergarten Cop:

"It's a tumor!"
"It's not a tumor."

"It's a penalty!"
"It's not a penalty."

Maybe you had to see the movie. :) Okay, off to check out a few other threads..

Does checking PR via the google toolbar mean we are looking at the new PR values? I can't seem to get an answer to my previous question on this.

Thanks..Laura

I'm also contrary to many others. Backlinks jumped from 366 to 570. For the KW phrase I'm targetting, went from 32 to 15. Hopefully will see some traffic for it now. For all the phrases I monitor, up on 95% of them (some significantly).

I think after I return from my vacation next month, it'll be time to crack out the credit card and become a full-fledged member here.

GG I love that movie. I have taught kindergarten and it's just too true. Now this webmaster crew is nothing like that. ;)

BTW my overdue baby theory worked. I had absolutely given up. I was convinced the dance wouldn't be till the end of the month and here it is.

Laura,

If you haven't messed with your hosts file, then "no, your toolbar does not yet show the new PR".

Morgan

msg:98560
 6:39 am on Apr 11, 2003 (gmt 0)

If you edit your hosts file, it can show the new PR. So for example, in your hosts file, you can add a line:

216.239.33.100 toolbarqueries.google.com

And your toolbar will show the PR from that IP, which at this point appears to be the one with the new index.

I am on Win98SE still, my hosts file was called hosts.sam, and was in the C:/Windows/ directory. I added the line and renamed it simply hosts with no extension and restarted. Seems to be working.

You can do a find for your hosts file, though.

If you haven't changed it, then it will occasionally show the new PR, but you have no way of knowing if it is.

laura to see the new PR you need to alter your windows host file.

It depends on exactly what version of windows you are running.

In the host file you need to add the folowig entry

216.239.33.100 toolbarqueries.google.com

Win 98 you will find your host file in ...
c/windows/host

winxp i think it is....
c/windows/ststem32/drivers/ect/host

Thanks Morgan and thanks GG.

It's hard to imagine a penalty that would remove a main index page but leave in 190+ other pages (96% of the whole website, give or take a page.) the www-ex even shows the numerous changes in the remaining pages which have been made to a multitude of the other pages over the last 14 days, albeit none of the new pages that went live in the past 5-7 days.

I went ahead and wrote to the webmaster@google.com earlier, as that was the addy GG had posted up.

I'm not panicky, just confuzzled. After all, the remaining interior pages show up fairly well for the terms most use to find our little info site. I've never had the index page go missing on me before.

a few weeks back, when I did a redirect so index.html would come up index.htm, I dinna dream that simple 301 was shorthand for index.hey-the-main-link to become
index.hey-tis-missing

Cheers, luck and best wishes to all

kevinpate, I hope you're right. But I was stupid enough to do some SearchKing advertising back before the blowout, and I got caught in the penalty because they didn't remove us even when we stopped paying.

I do think it was different then, though, I think all of our incoming links just stopped counting. I remember thinking that even though I was hosed, at least I knew how the penalty worked. They just stop counting any incoming links for you and you go away. This time the incoming links still show.

I wrote to search-quality about both of our sites, we'll see. And obviously things could change anyway.

Thanks for the host file path on XP. Editted mine and now I'm very happy to see we got PR 6 back. We also got bumped to #3 on a most coveted term in our interest. I'm loving this dance.
