Next Update
When is the expected time

 10:23 pm on Apr 6, 2003 (gmt 0)

When do you expect the next update to begin?

Also, between each update, how many times (on average) does googlebot visit your site?

 3:36 pm on Apr 8, 2003 (gmt 0)

I see the same thing...I think we're startin' :)

 3:39 pm on Apr 8, 2003 (gmt 0)

Also seen here

I saw it too. And I saw some sharp fluktuations when doing some other searches.

 3:44 pm on Apr 8, 2003 (gmt 0)

Not seeing it here in NYC. Steady as she goes.

 3:45 pm on Apr 8, 2003 (gmt 0)

I also this yesterday. Thirty five results returned for what I know is 25K.

 3:49 pm on Apr 8, 2003 (gmt 0)

I don't think 0 results is an indicator. However, I just noticed that one of my sites which, prior to now, has only been included by freshbot is in the index without any fresh tag.

 3:49 pm on Apr 8, 2003 (gmt 0)

Lets stay calm until we see definate NUMBERS on backlinks differ!

 3:49 pm on Apr 8, 2003 (gmt 0)

Now I'm seeing it in 4x4 and 3x3 but not on the update checker:

 3:51 pm on Apr 8, 2003 (gmt 0)

Lets stay calm

.. tee hee.. never gonna happen! ;)

(Don't see it from here (UK))

edit: Ah.. I do now! :)

Its probably that its getting hit so hard by people checking for an update its coming back with No Results....it means nothing, Only when it changes from that seemingly ever lasting number of 692,000 will we then know its on!

 3:55 pm on Apr 8, 2003 (gmt 0)

The 'no results'-thing was spotted yesterday in [webmasterworld.com ]

 3:55 pm on Apr 8, 2003 (gmt 0)

For about a week now, using the tool found here: www.**** and viewing all 8 data centers, I get 3 different sets of results for one of my key-phrases.

Data center 1 is on its own.

Data centers 2 & 4 are together.

Data centers 3, 5-8 are the same.

I have been watching "The Dance" for about a year now, and I have never seen this happen outside of an update. Again, it has been happening for a week.

If anyone would like to view the key phrase in question, just email me.

 3:55 pm on Apr 8, 2003 (gmt 0)

I don't agree that a change in backlinks indicates the start of the update. A change in backlinks indicates that one of the data centers has the new index. They may have started loading the index to that data center 12-24 hours prior to that.

I agree, dazz. And the fluctuations that I told about have calmed down to insignificant differences. Everflux I guess.

 3:58 pm on Apr 8, 2003 (gmt 0)

Make that 2 of my sites now have what seems to be 'permament' inclusion in the index. Prior to now included only with fresh tags.

 4:07 pm on Apr 8, 2003 (gmt 0)

From Brett yesterday to calm every body down:

network error of some type - couldn't connect.

from [webmasterworld.com ]

Well it didn't work that much yesterday ...

 4:09 pm on Apr 8, 2003 (gmt 0)

I am seeing the database "blinking" occurring at all 8 datacenters. Using google-dance, I searched link:www.mysite.com and the first time, datacenter 1 showed "no results found". Hit refresh and datacenters 5 and 7 showed it...hit refresh again, datacenter 2 and 7. This is wierd, but I am not convinced it has anything to do with update starting. Some server problems or glitch?

 4:10 pm on Apr 8, 2003 (gmt 0)

Dazz, you're not serious about the "too much activity" thang!

Google, on average, handles over 1,000 queries per *second*.

 4:27 pm on Apr 8, 2003 (gmt 0)

I'm seeing
www = 692k
www2 = 692k
www3 = 0 links
for link:http://yahoo.com
addition: www-zu = 0 links

One of my former fresh pages is still there...but no fresh tag. Weird, because it only got crawled by 64.*

Its also in a significantly different position than it ever was.

hmmmm....I'm not seeing fresh tags anywhere. Not even when I search for something like 'cnn'

 4:33 pm on Apr 8, 2003 (gmt 0)

The zero yahoo backlinks are coming from www-ab.google.com intermittantly.

I hope it comes soon!

 4:36 pm on Apr 8, 2003 (gmt 0)

www1 - page 2 position 5
www2 - page 2 position 5
www3 - page 2 position 5

For me but what I noticed is that on www2 the site listed below me is diff than on www1 and www3, does this mean anything?

 4:39 pm on Apr 8, 2003 (gmt 0)

all these messages about the update are showing that the update is happening "later than expected". Which means that google's delivery is not in line with expectations...yes, they may be the best around, but the auidence is expecting a better show.

Or perphaps Google is not catering to a discerning auidence and is just catering to the general public. This mentality will ultimately reflect in the qulaity of their product. Which I may add is not up to the mark for a sophisticated users: I spent the last few days searching for a common product that I knew about, but just could not find on Google. I was very surprised at this. It turned out that this product was buried deep between nos. 300 - 700, because it's keyword string contained words that are very popular (radio), and thus it was unable to narrow down to my product 'casue all the streaming radio station sites had higher page rank.

Google definetly needs to up the delivery of it's product and change it aim from being the best search engine around, to a "highly useful search engine".

It is riduculous that the update dosen't come till the 2nd week of a month...

Considering its free I'll take it whenever it happens

"Considering its free I'll take it whenever it happens"

I can't agree with you more, wise words mate :)

 4:50 pm on Apr 8, 2003 (gmt 0)

I think everyone needs to take a day off. I can assure you that when the update actually begins, it will be officially posted on the homepage within minutes.

Until that happens, I think we all should spend our time discussing other things. So lets try and refrain from anymore "has it started?" threads.
