Hoping that some things change before this becomes final. Just got jumped by a guy who has loads of "hidden" content on his home page. I don't mind legitimate jumps...but...

Also think i am being penalized for having backlinks in jsp pages that are

/foo/bar/page.jsp?param=444

whereas a competitor does much better for backlinks from jsp pages by doing the following:

/foo/bar/page444.jsp

MetropolisRobot,

Certain links carry less weight than others. This does not mean that the links that carry less weight are penalized.

Ive been sitting here for the last seven days - checking WebmasterWorld every ten minutes to see if it has started. I've been sweating and fretting and i turn my attention to real work and then come and check these boards and I MISSED IT - I bloody missed it! All that anticipation gone to waste and my first message in the thread is 17 pages in.

DOH!

Nick, thanks for the post.

Just seems to me that when you check the backlinks after an update that foobar.jsp will give a backlink point, whereas foo.jsp?bar=x will not....

Most of my pages in my site are PR3 or 4.

Anyways, it's all a learning experience.

Kudos to GoogleGuy from me to for his participation. And NO, I'm not saying that to suck up. I doubt sucking up would do any good. Of course, if I thought he was Satan I wouldn't mention it here though for fear of being cast into the flaming pit of PR0. ;) My main site so far is doing a bit better, but I attribute that just to the fact I figured out how to score a really juicy new link on a PR6 page with exactly the anchor text I wanted.

Also as insight. I seem to have lost ground in the use of the generic term, but as we get more specifically geographic in terms of the search terms, I seem to have gained ground and overhauled some people.

interesting...

MetropolisRobot,

<Just seems to me that when you check the backlinks after an update that foobar.jsp will give a backlink point, whereas foo.jsp?bar=x will not....>

Links generally won't show up as backlinks unless their PR is 4 or greater. If the PR of the JSP page is less than PR4, that could explain why it doesn't show up on a search. But don't worry, it still counts :-).

Nick, thanks as always for the insight. Always glad to hear from those who have a bit more knowledge of what we're seeing.

Another thing i am *experiencing* is that the dance seems faster this time (well for my category anyway) than it has done before. Seems that things are stabilizing far faster than they have done in the past.

Anyone else care to comment?

My website has not been spidered since jan 12. At that time I had some repeated keywords at the bottom of every page. The following week I removed all the keywords again. But that didn't help - my website (PR6) was still in the index but with the cache from jan 12.

Mars 2 i wrote to google about it (help@google.com) but didn't get any response.

Yesterday I read GoogleGuys post that every website that was punished and have wrote to Google about it was going to be respidered again.

But why is my website still not spidered?

mfishy, if you're willing I'd appreciate if you'd drop the queries you're doing into a spam report. I'd like to see the results..

Okay, seems like everybody is in pretty good hands. This is a great forum because so many people chip in to answer other people's questions. I'm heading off to bed soon. Hope everyone gets more pages indexed, and see you tomorrow!

Nick, seems like less dance on 2 and 3. In the past noted more movement over a given period of hours.

Might just be me.

There probably won't be another deep crawl for at least a few more days, if not a week or so. Since GoogleGuy made the post yesterday, that probably indicates things to come in the future (i.e. Your site should be crawled next time), not retroactively (i.e. We're going back in time to crawl your site) :-).

MetropolisRobot,

From my experience, the update doesn't seem to fluctuate continuously throughout the process. I've seen the link move around, then stabilize for hours, then move around again. No way to know what will happen until it happens though, I suppose :-).

Right then, so I missed the start of the dance! Doh!

It's taken me about 30mins to read all the posts in this thread so far and I only really have one comment:

GoogleGuy, on behalf of every webmaster that has been worried over the past weeks, I would like to thank you for your input in this thread and the many others you regularly contribute to.

From what I read the majority of people in here are happy with the new index as it stands at the moment so well done to you guys. I would wager a guess that the reason why you guys have gone "up in the [SE]world" is because of the feedback you have received from this forum. So a big thank you to Brett and the rest of the mods here at WebmasterWorld. I know for a fact that in the 3-or-so years that I've been aware of WebmasterWorld I have learnt so much valuable information!

For those of you that aren't happy with the way things have gone I would say, wait for a couple of days 'til the dance dies down and things begin to settle. If things are still bad after this period, then you should consider contacting google.

Now, time to write some more content :)

Best wishes everyone,

Sticky

Just wanted to thank GG.

I'm not big on reporting "spam" since I don't believe I am an authority on what "spam" really is. What I would perceive as bad for business may not be what google users believe is garbage.

In saying that... ranked #1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 9, 11 through 15 (all the domain & sub-domains) are all gone. Got the Google boot (they must be real happy now!)

Move from #8 to #3 and competing with some good quality stuff.

Appreciate the fine tuning.

This is my first dance and I need a little help understanding what to expect.

I see a changed www2 (692,000) and www3 (692,000), but
www is still 642,000.

Why?

Also.. I see a bunch of backlinks added to my www.___.com
on www2 and www3.. but my results for my targeted keywords
are a big let down. I have been receiving a lot of traffic for the past few days and when I WAS in the index and not dropped due to Everflux.

I am cringing because on www which is still 642,000 my targeted keywords page results are still pretty good.

Can someone please explain to me now that I have the backlinks in the index (one of them to a SPOT 1, PAGE 1, 1 WORD keyword site).. how come I am having worse search results for my pages on www2 and www3 , when supposedly that is what is suppose to give you credibility around here.

If www's update ends up being the same as www2 and www3 , I will just give up because my site is unique and awesome and getting 200 repeat visitors a day from only being debuted in mid January.

Please explain.

leifwessman,

<But GoogleGuy said that the crawl (for punished websites) was going to be in 24 hours...>

If I recall correctly, he didn't say anything about sites being crawled within 24 hours; he said that penalized sites would re-enter the index within 24 hours. But certain sites would need to wait for a full crawl/index cycle, which is normally about one month.

So that would seem to indicate that sites requiring a crawl would need to wait about one month before re-entering the index.

Not an enormous change... but then of course, it didn't need it.

In my sectors there have been one or two minor adjustments in the returns, which despite a neutral outcome for me, in fairness probably enhance the quality slightly. I think a 'well done' is due for that.

So certainly quality wise, no problems and probably improvement. The dilemma they probably face is time... how to keep the index as fresh as possible without any impact on that quality. That's a hard one of course.

Overall then, a thumbs up from here, even without any personal gain.
