I am confused about search engine submission. I have read statements like "if there is a mistake it is hard to correct, so make sure you get it right the first time". That scares me into not submitting at all. If I submit, and maybe something is wrong with my meta keywords (or length of keywords) and I get a low rating, can I ever resubmit? If so, when and how often. I have been a webmaster for about a week now (gulp). Being new, I exchanged links with a free for all link exchange that is related to my theme. Now I read that FFA links are bad and can get your site banned. Have I already messed up everything? Am I supposed to have my keywords perfect before I submit, and how do I do that? If I change my content and keywords in an attempt to reach perfection, do the search engines update my ranking? How often do they recognize my changes? Why are the search engines so unfriendly?

Rather than answer your specific questions allow me to point you to a Newcomer's Guide [webmasterworld.com].
There is a lot to learn, and webmastering is not a game in which you get instant gratification. One excellent thread referred to in the above is titled "Successful Site in 12 months with Google Alone". You may not need 12 months to implement all the suggestions, but building a good site does take time.
