But these often get ugly, and besides, you dont' always have the option to change them. So what about using the real domain name privately, and using realname-keyword.com for the SE? (Keeping all internal links relative). And what would be the preferred name for external links?

This method is not necessarily the purest form of SEO, but it does work well. On the other hand, if you work at building up your company domain with quality content and a number of quality inbound links, the same end result can be accomplished.
