| WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. government said Thursday that it shut down a scam that duped at least 27,000 Web-site owners into needlessly registering variations of their online addresses. ... According to the FTC, the company sent faxes to Web-site owners claiming that an unidentified third party had tried to register a site with a near-identical name -- www.reuters.net for www.reuters.com, for example -- but that the application could be halted for a $70 fee.
