ns lookup with webalizer on nt servers
bugger: only getting the raw ip addresses logged

Msg#: 634 posted 12:54 am on Nov 21, 2001 (gmt 0)

the webalizer for a site I manage, (URL removed) is running on a M$ IIS box - and it is only logging the raw ip addresses, no real names. our dearest provider is throwing the towel, they reckon nslookups take about 10 sec each and can't get it going. anyone with a similar problem - and a possible fix?

I'm not sure if this will help Ralf. The Webalizer FAQ (question 8) at [mrunix.net...] says you need V 2.0 to do DNS lookups. It also links to a DNS Readme file that contains pretty thorough guidelines for performing lookups.

They are actually running v2.01 so there must be some other glitch. I passed
the link to the readme.doc on to our hosting people, hope they can find something.

Thanks for your help.

(isp speaking):
The webalizer dns lookups do work, they just take forever and a day to run (it took an hour and a half for a small (3mb) log file).

I found out how to enable reverse lookups in IIS:
cscript adsutil.vbs set /w3svc/1/ROOT/EnableReverseDNS "TRUE"
however if the reverse lookup fails, instead of the ip address being entered into the log file, a "-" is entered instead - not overly helpful.

Any ideas?

see ya
