Using xSSI variables seems very similar to what you can accomplish using PHP... which would you suggest using? a mix of both?

I've never used XSSI so can't really compare/comment. However, I do use PHP (Perl and some others as well) and have found it offers quite a bit over standard SSI. Do I still use SSI? Sure, once in awhile, but if I had my option I would go with PHP.
