IP, operating system, etc.

Can anyone tell me how I can determine the IP address, operating system, Web server and release version for a Web site hosted on a particular Web server?

Download VisualRoute and it can tell you most things about a web server, unless the admin of the server has limited the servers response or ICMP packets are blocked by the hosting co. routers
Analysis: 'www.webmasterworld.com' was found in 11 hops (TTL=239). It is a HTTP server (running Apache/1.3.26 (Unix) FrontPage/220.127.116.110).

netcraft.com is probably the most common site that does this kind of thing for you.

If you have a copy of Lynx (a text browser) you can get some good basic info like this:
Lynx -head http://www.example.com
