Try looking at PayLoadz... We've never used them so I don't know if they are any good, but it sounds like what you're looking for.

osCommerce can it (it has PayPal IPN and downloadable products support).

recommending oscommerce for a simple download is (IMO) not very helpful - oscommerce is a huge system - massive overkill for a fairly simple solution probably far better to just say "use paypal IPN"

We've been looking at Website Payments Pro at PayPal. It's not necessarily a simple solution but you can work up your own checkout process and offer folks their choice using their PayPal account or a regular credit card for payment. We're using PHP as well. So far our tests have been good, but we're not live yet so I don't have any first hand experience to relate.

If you are selling only one ebook, then you could simply configure your Paypal Buy Now button to redirect the customer to your download area upon successful purchase. All you have to do is log into Paypal, go to Merchant Tools > Buy Now Buttons > Further Options, and where you see the Successful Payment URL, simply enter your download URL. You should ensure in the previous screen that your button has been encrypted. This ensures that no one can see the download URL and $ amount from the code on your website. Make sure too you have a good (digital rights management) DRM in place - If you are using such a system, and want it automated as well, then the Successful Payment URL would be the URL of your DRM registration page. Good luck!
