Banners do not convert half as well as text links in my experience. I would expect something like <0.5% CTR on banners. Try slipping a visible text link into your content or somewhere visible to the user. Ska

You could try both at the same time and make a comparison. That way you will know for certain which is the better performer. Ska

I agree about text links. As far as how long to test, you'll know quickly, a week should do.
