>What ads/companies do you use on your site and how many ads do you have up? My affiliates/merchants pay out at about a 6:1 ratio verses Ads on most of my sites. My merchant links look like data, my Ad. links look like menu options. I like to confuse the user! The Ads. are well hidden, the merchant links look like an integral part of the site. I figure the user has to click somewhere, and most of them choose the data elements......which is what I desire as it pays better! For those I miss because the data is of no interest, I try to lure them with an Ad. that looks like an alternative menu option.

What about the old bit of wisdom regarding multiple revenue streams? I use a mix of affiliates and pay per click ads. So far, the affiliates have been my top earners. My monthly checks from CJ seem very worth it to me...

You also need to carefully select merchants and products that target your audience. A lot of people who complain about not making money from affiliate ads just put up generic banners, etc., which is normally not going to work. Affiliate ads need to be much more targeted, and as tied into your content as possible.
