New BBS Software, Any Objections?

 8:28 am on Jun 14, 2000 (gmt 0)

note: 6-19-2000 the following thread is no longer valid, due to the fact, you are now reading this on the new system.

Any objections to switching to (url no longer valid) this new software? That is an initial test build of a new system. The graphics and stuff will change before I'd switch to it.

Some things are a little different, but there are many pluses:

1) Speed. It is 3 to 4 times faster than Ultraboard. Try it. Just click on a few messages and watch how fast they come up.
2) Easy of adaption. If I'd go to ubb, that would require mega work to save the old posts. With the new system, I can export the posts from here at will.
3) Hackable. Clean easy software that can be changed on a dime.
4) Did I mention speed?
5) More email options.
6) layout. I like the UBB style of showing posts better than this ultraboard.

1) less options for security and moderators.
2) far fewer options for the administrator to play with.

The example board is functional, but don't count on posts being kept if you sign up and test something...

If you see any stoppers, feel free to let me know.

it wouldn't let me post, did you move the registration?

the look & feel is good, is it vbulletin?

Nice board - wouldn't mind switching at all. Never really liked the speed of UltraBoard.

BTW - I would like to offer my services as a moderator for one of the forums or a directory editor for Buddy Links if you need any more help.

Registrations haven't been moved sorry. Should have mentioned that...just login new...no need for email confirmation.

I hope to be able to move the registrations over without hassle. I can do it now, but the passwords are not handled the same so I have to figure out something there. If I switch, I might do a full email with new passwords for everyone.

I got it last friday and it is already heavily modified. (powerboard from [thewebmasterforums.com...]

Thanks Oil, noted.

OK, I like it alot. But, I've seen another favorite forum (Gossamer-Threads) go to hell on speed issues when they converted from UBB to whatever-the-hell-it-is-now. What's under the hood on this one? MySql?

FEATURE request
Can we get a 2nd "jump to" drop-down at the bottom of the thread?

Houston, we have a problem.....

Ok. I c. thanks.

another bug

 10:26 am on Jun 15, 2000 (gmt 0)

I am more after big picture stuff at the moment.

If there are no major objections...conversion will commence over the next few weeks. The url of the new board mentioned above will probably die off sometime this weekend.

 1:39 pm on Jun 15, 2000 (gmt 0)

From the big picture standpoint, go for it. I suggest adding a "board bug" forum (bugs only, no bitching allowed).

 1:48 pm on Jun 15, 2000 (gmt 0)

hehe. The irony: a bug forum for the forum.

 4:35 pm on Jun 15, 2000 (gmt 0)

yeah, but it needs considerable tweaking. you have/had some 404's in the drop-downs, broken image calls, mostly odds & ends, but enough to need a cleanup. I think cross-browser might also be a problem with other items besides polls. We'll soon see.

Bugs aside (I like the idea of a bugs forum, though - anything to add a little auto-referentiality, eh?), the overall design, layout and - most importantly - speed is a real treat.

 7:57 pm on Jun 15, 2000 (gmt 0)

Oh yea, it will have mega bugs for a bit until I get into it. The main goal was trying to xfer all the message bases over there to see if they will live and seeing just what it could do.

Agreed, the speed is excellent. That is worth switching alone. I have never cared for UB speed - way to slow.

Well, nuked the test site mentioned above today and started on the real thing.
