Insight into what the lay person likes in a search engine

It's often struck me that SEOs and webmasters in general have quite skewed priorities for what makes a search engine good. Usually it's largely centred around 'the one that lists me top' and 'the one that sends me most traffic' but sometimes goes further to 'I like the layout' or 'it gives the most responses for the word 'the'. Anyway, here's an interesting article from the BBC News magazine section comparing the 5 highest profile search engines on a fixed set of criteria - an interesting view.
