If you add Google.com and Google.yahoo.com together, Google is now Russia's second most popular search engine according to SpyLOG, a Russian Internet statistics company. The market share has grown rapidly since the fall of 2000 and continues to grow. Only Yandex remains more popular at this time.

Google's support for the cyrillic alphabet is cited as the chief reason for the success.

Yandex, the leading Russian search engine, expects 1,25 million Euros ($1,1 mill) in revenue for fiscal 2001. This is 2,5 times more than last year according to a news story in Europemedia [europemedia.net].

Yandex will also launch an adword program similar to Google's.

Welcome to WebmasterWorld, Nicholas. I and my collegues hope that you will like this "University of Search Engine Optimization".

Thank you for the information on Tela. I took the liberty of editing your post in order to make the link clickable. I don't know why it didn't work, you did it the right way.

Do you know anything else about Tela, like known traffic volume? I did a little test and the index seems to be very small and a bit old. The newest links in the search reply I saw were from 2000. Tela appears to be spidering mainly, but not exclusively .ru sites. I did see a few dot-coms.

Although a choice of English interface is offered, it covers only the main page, not the search reply page. I can't read Russian, so could you please tell me what this means:

Your stuff on Mavica ties in nicely with the discussion here: [webmasterworld.com...] I notice from the statistics that Google appears to be taking market shares from Yandex and Aport (and probably AltaVista as well), but not from Rambler, which is actually gaining i popularity is spite of competition getting tougher. This will go into the next update of the overview of Russia.

Thank you for sharing the numbers - we love numbers here at WmW.

The ones you provide looks a lot like the ones that Nicholas has posted too. I expect they reflect the traffic to your site from the Russian search engines, right?
I checked Mytrix, and they look similar to Webtrends and other traffic analysis companies?

Even so the numbers are very interesting and provide a excellent base for getting a fix on the search engines scene in Russia :)

Potato - hmm... Standard search option is set to russian sites - either russian language or dot.ru, right? I found many sites from .kz domains.

I find it astonishing that the global majors of search technology, Fast and Google don´t really break in in the russian searchengine market. What do you think: Is the technology used by Yandex, Rambler and Aport good enough to stand the competiton? Is it perhaps good enough to to be sold to other engines of that area?

I see that there is a german version of Rambler [rambler.de]. I know that could be very successful due to the many people from Russia in Germany (called Aussiedler, kind of evacuee: people who emigrated from Russia to Germany because their forefathers went hundreds of years ago to Russia, and in the last few years the great-grandson were allowed to come back after the frontiers were opened for them), like the Krusenstern [krusenstern.de] in Germany.

We are going to start promotion in Russia, and I appreciate a correcture to my little list of engines:
Yandex, Rambler, Google, Aport
These are the only relevant engines, aren´t they?

Yandex has become the Number One in Russian internet since last year. Moreover, it has been attracting more and more users, like magnet. Yesterday Yandex served two million queries! I was astonished, because in December, 2001 it served only 1,5 million searches a day. I think, it's great!

That describes the size of Yandex index of the russian web? If so it's amazing - Fast counts 26,736,676 results in russian language. Google has some 50 Mill, I believe.
2 Mill. Queries daily is not bad either.

Yes, the numbers you've mentioned are correct [yandex.ru].

Yandex tries to know all sites with Russian text. That's why it automatically crawls sites in domains su, ru, am, az, by, ge, kg, kz, md, tj, ua, uz (which have a lot of Russian pages). Yandex also can crawl site in any domain if it's interesting to Russian users (in that case you should write to addurl@yandex-team.ru and ask them about indexing; your site will be manually checked).

A month ago Yandex started indexing well-cited pages, regardless of their language and domain, but it doesn't go further through their links. This trick is used to show suitable site description in search results.

I'm fond of Yandex. To my mind it's the most exciting search engine in the world. :) Yandex was the first to invent plenty of interesting things. For example, Yandex Bar [bar.yandex.ru] was announced before Google's one, and it's much more powerful and flexible than rivals' bars. Yandex has sophisticated and comprehensive query language [yandex.ru], but its results are relevant even in case of a stupid query (Yandex uses so called fuzzy search).

I took part in the Internet Searching Cup of Russia [kubok.yandex.ru] and in the last Cup I took 20-th place (there were 876 competitors). So I can claim that my search skills are quite good. During the competition I used mostly Yandex (only a few times I had to use Google and Aport). Yandex's perfect in informational queries and quite strong in navigational and transactional.

Both reasons are important. Aport used to be the most relevant Russian search engine till 1999. In 1999 it was bought by Golden Telecom. Aport hasn't made any significant improvement of their search technology since that time. Rambler used to be the strongest brand among Russian SEs till 2001, but it wasted time and Yandex succeeded to catch up and surpass it.
Yandex has been improving continuously a relevance of a search, but it has also designed a lot of services and made great strides in self-promotion. There is Internet Search Cup of Russia, News Search and Subscribe [news.yandex.ru], alert service [yandex.ru], which informs about new indexed documents with your keywords, Family filters [family.yandex.ru], and so forth.
However, I think that the clue of Yandex's success is in his attitude to users: Yandex seems to be alive. I wrote letters to all Russian SEs, but only Yandex replied instantly in most cases. It has been presenting a new service or an improvement every week or fortnight since the end of 1999!

This service is called Yandex.Direct [direct.yandex.ru]. It isn't PPC, you should pay for ad impressions (today 1000 impressions cost $20). Y.Direct has keyword tool, which is available for free after the registration. It's similar to Overture (GoTo) Suggestions. You can see an example of ads here [yandex.ru]. Direct, unlike AdWords, doesn't take into account ad's CTR. If there're some ads to be shown, Direct applies a random order.
I used this service and its strong and weak points are the same as AdWords'. You should carefully choose your keywords and your text of advertisement. My best ad had CTR more than 5%, and I think it's good result.

Well, with this excellent info - thanks funsad! - interested webmasters should be able to start out testing the waters in the russian speaking web.

In Russia alone the potential market has grown over the last year to some 18 Mill users.
Interestingly the trend in Russia goes to access from work. The percentage of home users actually decreased to a rough 40%.
I suppose this trend is due to the rising use of the web for B2B operations in Russia.

my 2 cents

Yandex's Citation system (similar to Google PageRank) DOESN'T count the authority of the linking site. So for Yandex it's the same whether a major well-known site links to you or a personal Home Page.

Also they have a directory (you need to apply for inclusion). Beeing listed in directory helps to stay on top in related searches. Your position in directory also depends on your Citation Yandex (PageRank).

Yandex's Citation system (similar to Google PageRank) DOESN'T count the authority of the linking site.

You're not absolutely right. Yandex Citation Index is a ranking factor only for their directory. Yandex search do use a slightly modified PageRank algorithm to rank sites.

Beeing listed in directory helps to stay on top in related searches.

It used to be a strong ranking factor. Yandex removed directory sites from search result pages on 29 April, 2002. Since that time being listed in directory helps a bit only if description of your site contains proper keywords.

finally I started getting serious Yandex traffic this month...along with a lot from www.vokruginfo.ru...does anyone know more about this site?...it seems quite a large scale portal at first sight

www.vokruginfo.ru is a collection (digest) of non-standard, sensational - news and editorial articles. It is a Russian version of a supermarket tabloid online.

Russians come to read some weird and sensational news on this website, with no guarantees of truthfullness or authenticity...
