The ODP is the Open Directory Project - [dmoz.org...]

It's the largest human edited directory on the net.

The Google directory pulls data from the ODP - [directory.google.com...]

It's just a good link to have, especially when you are first starting to build awareness of your site on the Internet.

For some topics, it is a great place to find cool sites, especially in non-commercial areas where there are editors who are really passionate about a subject and scour the web to build up a great category of resources.

how to get benefit from it.

Pick a category (ideally for starters, one you have an interest in but no direct commecial interest -- your home town may be a good one).

Apply to be the editor, and then add all the sites on the web that belong in the category you are editing.

In the course of reviewing several hundred sites and adding just a small fraction of that number (because so many sites are not eligble for an ODP listing) you'll learn far more about website design: what works, what doesn't, than ten times the same hours spent fussing over your own sites.

Being an editor is an unmissable education.
