Niche Directories and Duplicate Content:
Is having the same listing in multiple categoies a problem?

I'm trying to build a small directory of vendors in my topic area. Here's the problem.

I have a site structure that works really well for my visitors. I'd like to duplicate that structure for the directory.

But that would result in a number of listings appearing in several widget specific categories.

There would also be some listings in each category that are unique to the category.

And not all of the duplicate listings would appear in every category.

On top of that, these same listings should appear in subject or location categories, that would mean even more duplication.

These are all static html pages. There just are not enough listings to bother with any kind of dynamic pages.

So, how likely is this duplication to cause problems?

I wouldn't sweat it. As long as you have a well-populated directory, entries appearing in multiple categories isn't a problem, IME.
