I would say check the category of the Yahoo directory that you will end up in. If it has a PageRank of at least 5, then pick Yahoo. Google really likes sites in Yahoo.

I always launch a new site with a listing from the yahoo directory. Great to establish the theme of your site from the offset...If the coffers are a little dusty then why not consider getting listed over at sbd.bcentral.com Microsoft's directory.....I believe at $49 (per url, 99$ for 3 urls) it's excellent value.

Just to clarify I was thinking of Yahoo UK Directory, I believe the price is still £199 one time payment as apposed to a recurring fee for the Yahoo.com directory ( I think I'n right in saying that). I wondered whether Google for example with value a link from Yahoo's directory any more than from other directories, all other things being equal, like pagerank for example.

It does get valued more than most directories. But pagerank has nothing to do with it, it's link pop. Look for the keywords in the category name, and check out the number of other sites listed there already.
