SNAP is updating

 3:04 am on Jun 13, 2000 (gmt 0)

just got a batch of eight emails all saying "Your site has been promoted" (to main directory) --the last batch came in May 3rd, so it looks like it's about every 5 weeks.

another batch of eight --now 16 total.

 12:05 pm on Jun 13, 2000 (gmt 0)

another 221 promoted this morning

the previous thread on Snap is here

 2:33 pm on Jun 13, 2000 (gmt 0)

Yes, we also just got promotion letters from Snap for some of our client sites. However, the level of traffic they are sending just dropped to almost nothing!

I went to Snap to check things out. Although the little report they have still says, in one case for instance, two number 1 KWs and two number 5's, now a search on those KWs does not return my client's site at all. Same story with a second client who was also just promoted.

In fact, the whole results list has changed and it looks really spammed. Anyone know what's going on? We certainly miss the traffic. Its not much of a promotion.

re: However, the level of traffic they are sending just dropped to almost nothing!

I've seen it mentioned somewhere (here? SEF?) that any "popularity" is lost when you are moved up to the main directory, and that the listing must battle for position once again within its new grouping. As for the searches and the site missing, I wonder if there is a time lag before it is indexed again? I, too, searched for KWs on the earlier update and couldn't find my listings.

OK, I just checked on the new batch. It seems I'm in there on the most basic searches, but not necessarily on all the KWs I filed when submitted. On some searches, the return DOES include a keyword, on others it does not... so there must be some editor intervention on that level. Editors are definitely at work here, btw, because my title and descriptions are being altered significantly, but -in general- they seem to be doing a C+/B- job.
(Hey! Who's going to complain about the 1st slot for "San Jose CA" and the 2nd for "Anaheim CA" ?? --not me, that's for sure! )

update 2:
The main directory has some of the keywords. In the above example of "San Jose CA", if I search on just "San Jose" and then click the pre-built related link "hotels in san jose california" I come up on page 4.

So far from the new Snap listings, they have generated about 50 referrals. Nothing to write home about for two weeks, but they were right on our targeted keywords, so I can't complain.

I received a couple of the update e's too, but I can't tell the effect yet.

 2:07 pm on Jun 20, 2000 (gmt 0)

Another update 06/19/00 -- 35 more pages promoted. These are individual city guides, and mostly in the west (CA, CO), where my traffic tends to be the most focused --this probably accounts for the relative popularity.

 3:37 am on Jun 26, 2000 (gmt 0)

Well, I have a group of MS/Windows related (yes, me with microsoft pages - shh), that I've done strictly for Snap. We will see how well they do in Snap.

I've just been watching all these windows/ms related keywords flyby on the spy and can't stand not being in on the action.Brett_Tabke

Just totaled up snap, and it ranked 35th on our referrals. Less than .05%. About 650 out of 70k referrals for june on the sites I compiled data.

 2:05 am on Jul 12, 2000 (gmt 0)

Snap is updating --an even 100 pages were promoted.

 12:50 am on Jul 15, 2000 (gmt 0)

and, it's updating yet again --183 promoted in this batch. (641 total since 05/03/00)

Snap is updating: 38 this time.

 10:23 am on Aug 1, 2000 (gmt 0)

Snap has moved me to number 3 for 'web site promotion' - I'm stunned!

 4:40 pm on Aug 1, 2000 (gmt 0)

Web site promotion could work out to be a fairly nice category under Snap. In an earlier thread, we discussed the likely demographic profiles of the users of the SEs and directories. I still see the co-branded Snap sites (ex:USwest) in my logs the most, and I think that demographic might migrate to web business issues pretty well. It's not like snagging the #3 slot in AV, but it could be a steady plugger for you, keep us posted if traffic starts turning up.

Snap is updating: 36 this time.

 9:15 pm on Aug 3, 2000 (gmt 0)

This time I noticed some movement. The referrals still are nothing to write home about, but I do hope for the future this fall with Snap. I've heard they are getting ready to do a promo campaign during football this season with NBC. 'brought to you by Snap'...etc

 4:10 am on Aug 4, 2000 (gmt 0)

another update tonight -24 this time.

 4:25 am on Aug 4, 2000 (gmt 0)

Did you watch any of the convention coverage? Snap led into almost every commercial.

 1:01 am on Aug 5, 2000 (gmt 0)

...and yet another little batch, 35 this time. I thought I was seeing a pattern develop, now it looks like updates are coming more frequently. Maybe NBC has sent them some more operating cash or something.

Also, I'm wondering if my pages that get in the main directory tend to pull up their bretheren, i.e., Snap users clicking on a 2nd or 3rd page because they've seen one of the other pages. It's got to come from a click-thru from Snap to be factored in their popularity quotient.

>Did you watch any of the convention coverage? Snap led into almost every commercial.
What convention? No, but I'm damn glad to hear they are building their brand. Like LookSmart, I think Snap has made some backroom deals early on that are going to pay out big dividends in the long run --and that TV-watching crowd fits my target demographic just about perfectly.

This is really getting to be a sweet deal, I'm thinking of applying for 'Most Favored Nation' status w/ Snap.

RC - Are all these pages you have listed from the same site?

You know when you submit your site to the Live Directory, you can enter up to 5 keywords.

Is there a way to get more than those 5 in the Live Directory? Does the spider pick up more pages/keywords automatically?

 2:20 pm on Aug 7, 2000 (gmt 0)

>RC - Are all these pages you have listed from the same site?
Yes, it is a 'guide' about 3900 cities and towns, 1 page per town. I wrote a script that submitted them under Snap's proper "Local" category after receiving deep-linking clearance from an editor. It haven't tallied recently, but it appears that approx. 20 percent have migrated to the main directory.

>Is there a way to get more than those 5 in the Live Directory? Does the spider pick up more pages/keywords automatically?
No, as far as I know, Snap doesn't index any pages other than those submitted.

Yes, it indexes the title and the description -but I suggest keeping them short and targeted to encourage the editors to let it pass as submitted. Editors are involved in the process, and sometimes change what I've submitted, but I spent a lot of time paring the title and text down to the bare bones, and they've rarely made any substantial changes.

 9:16 pm on Aug 17, 2000 (gmt 0)

Snap is updating -31 so far this afternoon.

 10:03 pm on Aug 17, 2000 (gmt 0)

Three of my clients are enjoying very nice rankings on Snap (1 - 7 on 4 or 5 keywords) But after an inital taste of activity, it's next to no Snap referrals again for all of them.

I'm sure results depend on what the topic is, but my clients seemed to have exhausted the pool of potential interest that Snap can offer them, for now at least.

 3:45 am on Aug 18, 2000 (gmt 0)

>depends on topic
It must, Snap is doing a great job for me, yet many make posts similar to yours. For my purposes, the traffic is coming in extremely focused and ready to do business. Conversion rates are super. Somebody send me a Snap t-shirt, I'll wear it.

NBCi is updating

 8:56 pm on Jan 14, 2001 (gmt 0)

NBCi updated on January 12th. About 100 pages were promoted, the largest batch for my site in a while.

Traffic is strong, btw. More and more co-branded sites, mainly ISP's.

 5:36 am on Jan 15, 2001 (gmt 0)

Regarding NBCI.com, do they allow webmasters to submit hundreds of pages from one domain name (assuming that the keywords and titles are all different and are factual)??

For example, Let's save I have two pages that deal with :

1. North Carolina retail stores
2. South Carolina retail stores

Should I submit these two pages to NBCI.com using, of course, appropriate keywords? I look forward to your reply.
