Is dmoz down?
Tried ping and tracert from the UK...

 6:30 pm on Oct 15, 2002 (gmt 0)

Getting plenty "request timed out" messages here. Or is it just something up with my rubbish connection?

C:\>ping dmoz.org

Pinging dmoz.org [] with 32 bytes of data:

Request timed out.
Request timed out.
Request timed out.
Request timed out.

From RR in NC, USA. (cryptic enough?)

Thats exactly what it looks like from here, too :(

Tracert gets out and over to the US, and dies at, which I guess must be a switch in the datacentre or something, cos I can't find any domains for that IP, and WHOIS reports it as part of the IANA reserved blocks

>> Comment: This block is reserved for special purposes.
>> Please see RFC 1918 for additional information.

This is a frequent occurence... I wonder what on earth is going on. I'd love to know where they are hosting it. Maybe they are cutting corners to save some dosh.

I wonder if dmoz.org bans certain user agents.

All those links flowing in on top of heavy spidering from all directions must not leave much bandwidth for the human visitors :)

I can't do a traceroute from here...

The IP you gave is a private network IP... (like 192.168.0.x)

dmoz.org is in fact down. (Over the last day or three, when up, it doesn't allow editors to log in; when it allows editors to log in, it still may not allow NEW editors to log in; and when it allows editors to log in, it may not actually preserve their edits.) So, for now, it's probably best that it stay down, until the other problems are being resolved. I understand they are being worked.

If you're an editor, don't panic: you may not yet have been expelled for your misdeeds, even if other editors seem to be logging in.

If you're a site submitter, don't panic: NO, 10,000 sites DIDN'T get added over the last three days (and another 10,000 submittals rejected) but we'll be back at work when we can.

Thanks for the update, Hutcheson. Would this also explain a cgi error during site submittal multiple times over a few day period? I heard one such complaint, though I haven't tested the submitter myself.

Dunno about the CGI error. (If I can't edit, I just go sulk.) But it is certainly plausible. In fact, I'd blame any problem from the last 10 days or so on this batch of gremlins (even though it hasn't been completely down all that time.)

Can't connect to dmoz from here too. If I hadn't read this post I'd have assumed it was problem with my Internet connection.
