We have a 'widgets' directory and maybe will exchange links with a 'widgets' news website. What will be the effect on our rankings when exchanging 1 - 10 - 100 - 500 links to each other (on each page a link to the other's homepage)

Please any advice or experience on this. I think its a relevant link for my visitor and for they come in to our site on all the 100 - 500 pages they always will see the link.

I only have one example of a similar situation. I suddenly received 100 new links from a big portal that decided to link to us on every page of their articles. I do NOT link back to them and Google recognises every link. And I'm happy. :) There might be a certain degree of risk in your case because you and the other site plan to link to each other on so many pages. You will surely get more solid advice from other members of this board. Cheers!

thankx for your answer Susanne. It is still an idea not really planned. From users perspective it's a good solution (giving them an on topic content recommendation/suggestion) so that should not be bothering a SE anyway. But i can image that it would look like a huge interlinking between two sites and therefor penalized by a search engine.

If it's safe i will consider to do, so please some 'real word' caes on this.
