There are lots of places offering services like this. However, the quality is generally missing or it's expensive. If it's a free site and you get the quality right then go for it. To get high quality you will need to categories all the links. That way someone can get to their category and see what sites are similar to link to. If the categories are not to your users liking or the sites listed 404 you will lose customers quickly. I must admit to trying to build a site like this a while back. I got the categories wrong a ditched the site because noone stayed on my site for long. Saying all the above, this can be a very successful, helpful and rewarding site. Alot of people will appreiate the help. If you want any more specific advice feel free to sticky me. Chris.

Sounds as if such a dynamic portal could easily be mistaken for being a FFA link farm?

heini, It is easy for this to happen. To over come it you must include at least two full paragraphs of content above the directory on the first page and have several other pages of pure content with no external links. Notice I am using the word directory. I believe it will be more of a directory that a FFA link farm. Every site should be looked over before inclusion and should be created for the purpose of giving people ideas of who to link to. My two pence Chris.

I have also been looking in to this subject, but while creating it for my experience, also trying to earn a bit of cash along the way? eg banners etc.... Any ideas on this, or is it hard to make money from this kind of site? any ideas appreciated

I am NOT going to make any money from this site ( if I build it ) No charge for users whatsoever, No banners, No Popups etc etc. This is for the community. The site will be of exceptional quality with automatic monitering of dead hyperlinks, comments and questions for each post, brief description of site and content, where on the site the link will be, What kind of link e.g text or graphical current google pr etc etc. This will NOT be a FFA farm this site will provide "quality" links. Do you think this would work ? And if so what things should I add or delete from my ideas. Thanks Steve [edited by: xcandyman at 11:14 am (utc) on July 1, 2002]

Just read your post: chris_f Good idea about looking at site before inclusion. As luck would have it we have the basics created allready for the site with the option to review the sites before inclusion. It would help the quality of the site and I should have thought of that. Thanks Again Steve

If there is any comments, advice or questions please sticky me and I will try to answer as soon as I can. I will release a beta testing site so that users can test the site before it fully goes live. If you want to beta test the site please sticky me also. I thank you again for the support you have given. Steve

Ok, lets have a brief lull in the action. There are so many people doing this candyman, that it is really hard for us to allow it in the forums. When this forum first started, the first week was spam city. We usually run it pretty close to the vest here...
