Does using an affiliate program help link popularity

Does using an affiliate program that is separately hosted and referenced help with link popularity or does the link popularity go to the affiliate program software itself?

ie click from www.firstwebsite.com on banner

(banner reference [affiliateprogram:id=100)...]

and then directs to www.affiliatewebsite.com

I'm assuming that using an affiliate software program to track affiliates will not help with link popularity at all.

I think it depends on how large of an affiliate program. Is it going to be large enough to show up on the radar at an se? Then I would imagine it would get zapped by hand.

Otherwise, yes it sure will help with some se's.
