Try linking to (and getting return links from) related sites that are not in direct competition. Let's say you sell dog clothing. Instead of sending your visitors to your competitions' sites, work out link exchanges with sites selling dog beds or dog houses. Think "theme" more than about any kind of exact match. Hope it helps!

May want to check out this thread: On Link Relationshops and Relevancy [webmasterworld.com] I think this is a great comment from Caveman: | As for those wondering if the SE's won't see the relationships between sites/pages not directly related (like shoes and vitamins), don't bet on it. Algos are FAR better at seeing the relationship between toasters and bath towels than most people are. (Yes, there is a relationship between toasters and bath towels.) |

How about this, let's say I sell watercolors should I try to link to people who have art sites? - where art sites is a more general term

One more thing, let's say that I do get more links in, as in the previous example, I get let'ss ay 50 more art related links, would those be considered BACK links and that would increase my standing on the home page?

This is my first post to this forum so I apologize if this question has been asked and responded to before! I don't see a search capability so I'm adding to this post. If a site puts a link on their site to mine, but they use the target=_blank so another window opens, is this link still a valuable link in the eyes of the engines? Thanks for any help.

Generaly you will not get link from the sites those are top 20 or top40. Generally they do not give link. You may get one or two sites who will give. but most of the sites will not give. I think you can exchange links with your subject related sites. Because search engine gives more importance on subject relavancy. If your site is mortgage related and you are exchnaging links with car loan site or insurance related site then you will not get much value in the eyes of search engine. You will get more value if you get links from mortgage related sites. It will be more relevant link and search engine likes more these kind of link. So nothing harm with linking to your competetive sites.

Previous reply was to the following post. [Let's say I sold widgets. would you recommend that I link to many sites that also sold widgets? I would think that would be direct competition, no?]
