Before contacting the owners is there something that I can do on my server side to prevent being penalized for those links? I mean, if I restrict the access from those sites with htaccess does Google or other SEs still count them as incoming links? Thanks Enrique

There is a circumstance in which I do use an .htaccess redirect to send visitors coming from certain web sites away. Some of the web sites I manage offer free gifts (white papers, industrial safety guides, etc.) to encourge people to give out their contact information. Sometimes our site gets listed on a site that lists free giveaways. That brings in non-business people who are just looking for free stuff. So when I see that in our logs, I use the .htaccess file to redirect people coming from those sites to another of our sites. I've not noticed any negative effects in Google resulting from doing this.
