From my experience Google will only show the backlink on a search If that page your link is on has a page Rank of at least 4. It sometimes take a few weeks / months for you to get a decent page rank, depending on your content etc....
Hope this helps some...

Thanks a lot rj!
However, as far as I know Yahoo shows a more accurate number of backlinks regardless of pages' PR. So my site wouldn't come up in Yahoo either.

Yahoo, spiders sites and updates listing less often, the sites that link to you just may have not been found yet.

Best to wait two months before they show up in Yahoo, Google, or anywhere else. As long as someone is linking to you, move on and cultivate the next crop of links. It can drive you crazy checking the backlink counts. Myself, I never do. There's too much work to do to spend my time worrying about backlink counts.
And if that weren't enough to drive you nuts, Google has just changed the way they display backlinks. See this thread:

Thank you guys,
I also suspect that i'm not getting any page rank because my index page has like 50 links to internal pages while the number of external links pointing to my site is just 12.
