Opera Solves the Problem of Rendering Web Content on Medium-Sized Screens [opera.com]

After having revolutionized how people interact with their data-enabled phones with the introduction of Small-Screen Rendering (SSR) technology in 2002, Opera Software today unveiled Medium-Screen Rendering (MSR)... delicately squeezing content to fit the screen, without having to resort to horizontal scrolling or zooming.

Funky stuff indeed.

Opera does a pretty good job at squeezing things onto a small screen, but if you want more control of how your page will be displayed then you should supply a media="handheld" stylesheet.

Also see the Making Small Devices Look Great [my.opera.com] article at Opera.com for more hints (originally aimed at the small screen rendering mode but just as applicable to medium screen rendering).

I hope they add a medium screen rendering view to Opera. I find the small screen view invaluable (View->Small Screen or just press Shift+F11).
