Beta testing the Yahoo Publisher Network
A look inside...

I have been one of the small handful of publishers beta testing the YPN, and it was worth the wait :)

YPN is very similar to AdSense in a lot of ways, but it has some quirks to work out during the beta period. It has ten ad unit sizes (same as AdSense) and similar reporting features in the control panel, including downloadable reports.

You can also block advertisers, customize channels for tracking (although only 50 of them), and create ad unit styles for display.

Ad units look similar to AdSense, although the text is larger, and hence shows fewer ads. For example, the large rectangle only shows three ads with YPN instead of four.

A couple cool features - you can transfer your earnings to your Yahoo Search Marketing account.

The home page of the control panel features your total daily earnings, and it tells you what time your earning stats were last updated, which is great for stat junkies.

Now, the question everyone wants to know. YPN is open for beta testing by invite only. But you can apply to become a YPN beta tester [advision.webevents.yahoo.com] and hopefully be one of the ones invited:

If you're interested in being considered for the Yahoo! Publisher Network beta program, please enter your information below. Participants of the program must be a resident of the U.S., with valid U.S. Social Security number or Tax ID.

I would assume they plan to open it to those who don't meet the above criteria when it launches out of beta by the end of this year.

Jen...Thanks for the link.
I eitherway applied to beta test the YPN launch.

Any specific reason as to why they are limiting only to US residents?

Cheers

The 6000000 question. How's the payout compare? If you know the answer yet :)

I am curious if YPN allows you to show other ads. I ask because there is a question about that on the sign up form.

Thanks Jenstar.

As someone else asked the million dollar question is really how the money compares to AS.

Still early days but any indication yet?

We're willing to give this a go. Offered up a site with good traffic and member base. We'll let you know how this pans out.

Thanks for the link Jen.

>> the million dollar question

It is early days, but YPN has the same terms regarding disclosing stats as AdSense does, so I can't start spouting my CTR, EPC, CPM etc. However, I can that when I did my stat checking this morning (and I admit, I am becoming a stat junkie at the moment ;)) that it did exceed my expectations.

Of course, it is early days, and I like to have at least a week's worth of data when I do any kind of testing, so I will report back soon. But from my experiences so far, YPN is going to be a true competitor capable of going head to head with AdSense. Let the games begin :)

I do 5-6 million pageviews a day and am one of the largest adsense publishers. I tried talking to yahoo a few months ago to get into the beta and they told me i was to small. hahahah.

Will Canadian publishers be allowed in, Jenstar? (I think you're in Canada, if I'm not mistaken)

They're trying to poach Jenstar! LOL, that would be a huge coup for Yahoo.

This question must have been asked before but I can't find a definitive answer:

***** Can we have both YPN and Adsense on the same website (I know we can't have it on same page)?

I just got my invite and very surprised since I only have 240 pages and about 15,000 pageviews a day.

I'm not sure if I got the beta invite or not as I seem to have cranked up my SPAM filter a wee bit high and found some other letter from YPN in the trash today.

Not sure I should even bother asking them at this point it's too embarassing.

I asked this at pubcon and was told yes, as long as you don't have them on same page.

Jen thanks for early insights - as much as I like adsense I'm very happy to see some serious competition come onto the field from Yahoo and soon from MSN.

I have a question.. I noticed you put them on a few of your other sites as shown in your blog... Did you need manual approval of each site? Or are you given a blanket account like google?

YPN has the same terms regarding disclosing stats as AdSense does

But you can say Google pays $XXX and Yahoo Pays $XXX, XXX program pays about XX% more than XXX program, once you got more stats.

That's exactly what we all want to know!

Any one else get accepted in?!

Jenstar,

Been reading your report on YPAN.
It sounds like they really copied adsense without much in the way of innovation. Am I wrong?

I mean they even have PSA ads! One of the stupidest things Google has done with adsense. They didn't need to copy that.

Layouts look the same. I don't see where you can sign up to buy an ad though.

Jen,

Do they review all sites where you wish to put their code or you may put it on any of your sites like with AdSense?

Okay, here ya go :)

Will Canadian publishers be allowed in, Jenstar? (I think you're in Canada, if I'm not mistaken)

I think I was an exception during the beta period. I am sure they are opening it up internationally once the beta period is over.

They're trying to poach Jenstar! LOL, that would be a huge coup for Yahoo.

LOLOL! Nearly got my latte on my monitor ;)

Not sure I should even bother asking them at this point it's too embarassing.

Ouch!

Do they share revenue split

No, although that is not surprising. It wasn't something I expected them to do.

anything similar to "smart pricing"?

Good question, and one I don't know the answer to at this time.

Did you need manual approval of each site? Or are you given a blanket account like google?

I didn't need to do anything special to add it to different sites, although I suspect it is all being watched very closely during the beta. So it could easily change once it has its main launch later this year.

What are the image ad's like if they have them?

No, I don't believe they are doing image ads, at least not at this time.

It sounds like they really copied adsense without much in the way of innovation. Am I wrong?

They definitely have some features AdSense doesn't, such as the timestamp of the stats data and the ability to move YPN earnings to your Yahoo Search Marketing account so you can spend it on ads. Publishers have been requesting that of AdSense/AdWords since the launch.

are they paying more?

And that is the million dollar question :)

It is quiet surprising that earnings are good. Adsense has a much larger advertising pool compared to Yahoo. I guess Microsoft is also planning to release a similar network.
