Microsoft Briefcase filesize limitations?
Maximum filesize in windows briefcase?

 10:06 pm on Jan 22, 2006 (gmt 0)

Hi all,

As part of my bakup strategy, I use a Windows Briefcase (XP) to sync the backup files between my local drive and an external harddrive.

My backup file is about 9GB, but I noticed in the Briefcase that the size for all my large backups is marked as 4,164,304. This leads me to believe that their is a limitation in the briefcase.

However, when I look at the properties of the briefcase, the total file size is much greater.

Is there a file size limitation, or just a bug in the file size label?

PS I'm using NTFS

PPS If you can suggest a better way of handling this backup setup, I'm all ears. This is just something I came up with so that I can take my external offsite and still have automatic nightly backups. I'm using the Windows backup tool (.bkf files)

I've been digging around this morning but can't seem to find a limit for backed up files in briefcase. Let me get this straight, you have one 9GB .bkf file that you're using in briefcase, or the total of your files in the briefcase is 9GB?

I have several 9GB bkf files (daily, weekly, monthly backups).

Thanks for your help!

These backup files are functioning properly (i.e., you can restore the backup files that you've synced with briefcase), but the only problem you're experiencing is the display of the file-size within briefcase?

It appears this way yes. Strange huh?

Odd. I'm not finding anything in the MS KB or other sites documenting this.

You may want to try asking Microsoft directly about this one. From their Support page [support.microsoft.com] head over to their Support Services area. You can often get free e-mail, chat or phone help depending on the product.

Also, please report back if they can help. I'd be interested to know after all this looking about. ;)

I've posted this issue over at MS' newsgroups

Haven't heard anything yet though... :-(
